Seasons greetings from a very wet northern Australia - its like England up here in Cairns, although they tell us they are not used to getting any wet weather between november and december, typical!
We arrived in Cairns having been lied to by none other than our flight captain who stated that the weather was fine and around 30 degrees, however when we landed we were greeted with cloud and an average temperature of about 20 we were disgusted. We soldiered on and made our way to our accommodation which was quite nice and pleasant, with a little pool and a help-yourself kitchen.
We had already booked a one day tour of cape tribulation from Perth and although it was a little bit rushed, we did get to see practicallty everything that was there. The day started off with a cruise through Daintree forest looking for crocs! We didnt see any crocs though and had to make do with a tree python, fruit bats and a load of birds. Following this we had a leisurely stroll through the ever-so picturesque daintree rainforest where we got to see some nice views across the landscapes. The most dangerous thing we saw here though was a tree called a wait-a-while which has tiny hooks on it and pulls on anything it attaches to.
We had a brief stop for refreshments and then onward to Cape Tribulation, we had a nice walk along the beach here which was gorgeous - it had white sands, torquise waters but we couldnt swim there as box jellyfish swarm the sea here. Our final stop was at Mossman gorge which is basically a giant rock pool. We had a little paddle here and took some snaps of the scenery before reboarding the wagon back to Cairns. Gutted we didnt see a croc - that was until our tour guide spotted one from the side of the road. We all got a glimpse of its sheer size but unfortunately couldnt stop for pics as we saw him from a bridge in the river whilst we were in the middle of traffic!!
On our final day in Cairns it basically p****d it down all day! We had organised a trip on the skyrail to the top of the mountain - very brave of Dan!! We went all the way to Kutunga on the skyrail passing over gorges, valleys and waterfalls which really were beautiful even in the rain. Our return journey back into Cairns was via an old classic railway train - we took a slightly different route through some different areas and saw another waterfall and some views over Cairns itself. Shell slept all the way back and didnt see a thing!
Well we are off to Airlie Beach tomorrow via Greyhound bus and then its off to The Whitsundays, Fraser Island and Hervey Bay on our 8 day tour. This had better be sunny or we are having a refund!! Speak to you soon guys take care love always x x x Danny & Shell x x x
