Hello again everybody, hope your all doing well and you're all ready for christmas!!
We actually managed to have exceptional weather on this tour - a first for everything. We took the overnight greyhound from Airlie beach to Hervey bay and checked onto our self drive 3 day fraser island tour, as we arrived knackered - our transfer guy didnt show up and we had to beg another guy to take us to our accommodation. Luckily for us he obliged and we got to the hostel in time for our briefing. As we were doing a self drive tour on sand we had to learn the basics of four wheel driving and sand driving before we left civilisation!
The tour started by loading the jeep ourselves and then to the shopping mall for food and beers followed by reversing onto the ferry for our crossing to fraser island - not easy when you have the worst gearbox in existence and have to keep changing from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive! Still we managed to get across the water and onto the island for late morning. After a spot of do it yourself lunch - sandwiches that were bought and made ourselves - can you believe it? We headed for lake mackenzie - which is a freshwater lake with crystal clear water in the centre of the island, it was sooo gorgeous. We had a swim hear and a bit of a chill out before heading back to the jeep for more off roading!
Sand driving was easy goin on the beach and Dan did his stint of driving on the easy terrain. Our first night was spent camping on the beach and having a very nice auzzie bbq for dinner - all cooked by our morroccan head chef souhail - thanks souhail!! We had a proper Auzzie dunny for our toilet requirements - which is basically a purpose dug hole in the sand - one for the girls and one for the boys - obviously this meant that Shell was unable to use the dunny all weekend! After plenty of drinks we headed into our tent for a good nights kip. We arose the next morning and had the most disgusting meusli bar in the world for breakfast - eugh it was horrible! We did grab some cereals though before heading to Eli creek for our first stop - dan nearly crashed the jeep at the creek luckily we stopped before we got to the edge of the creek!! Eli creek was really pretty but had extremely cold water, so we decided to take the easy option by walking along the boardwalk. After the creek we headed to the shipwreck which was used during World war 2 as target practice, so is not really a shipwreck but the remains of a boat that was blasted by every man and his dog in the 1940s!
The next stop for us was the Champagne pools which were absolutely brilliant - the sea overflows the rocks here and crashes over the top creating loads of bubbles like a jacuzzi!! After a brief lunch and a pretty long time swimming and sunbathing here we headed north for our overnight stay. We met a really nice ranger who asked if we wanted to do a turtle hunt, had we known what the hunt was going to involve we would have definately declined his invitation. We ended up walking for about 5km after about 6 beers and found absolutely nothing but white crabs which Shell despised! We did however trek down the steepest sand cliff in the world which was absolutely brilliant!
The next day we were running out of time after a late get up, so we unfortunately headed back to the champagne pools instead of the itinery - had a blast - thanks to the gang for making it so enjoyable; Jamie & Peter, Carolyn, Irish Allan & Tony, Allan (AKA Elvis, Dougal), Souhail and Johanna.
Take it easy guys - hope you all get chance to drop us a message, love dan and shell x x x
