Slept in this morning. Our accomodation last night was an old mining hotel-has not been refurbished so has tons of antiques and memorabilia in it still. Quite run down-supposedly that's supposed to add to the 'authentic' west coast culture? Money making scheme for the owners perhaps....
In NZ, most coffee shops don't typically open until around 8am or later! Most stores close well before 9pm. A few more random things about life here. Things don't seem as hurried except in the city centres.
Right now, stopped in Hokitika-tons of Jade stores here. Just left Greymouth-population of 24000 which is the largest town on the west coast (small town comparably).
Plan to get into Franz Josef around 530. Hoping that the weather will cooperate for the helicopter trip tomorrow:)
Stopped at 'the Bushmans Centre' I believe it's in Westland? Did not go inside-although it's similar to a wildlife reserve. Goats, possums, eels, etc....
Lake Ianthe-glacier fed lake-passed by it on the way to Franz Josef. Hari Hari town-1st flight from Australia to NZ landed here. Mount Hercules-passed through. ?1080 is a poison of some sort
maybe a pesticide or fertilizer of some sort? Tons of protest signs on farming land.
Just arrived in Franz Josef and I am flying high:) Absolutely love mountain country! Having my own room tonight:) Cross fingers and toes that weather will cooperate for the helicopter flight tomorrow morning:)
A few more of my favourite sayings:
'Let's jump in and never look back' & 'Slow down, make it last....'
