So... I have done a lot more travels in NZ since I last wrote (which I'm sure you can tell from the various photo albums!)
Lets just fill you in on the various places I've done so far in 2010...
First off was a trip up north a wee bit to Leigh with a group of friends from work to have a bit of a chill out. We spent a lot of time on the beach and I tried snorkelling for the first time which was awesome but very very weird!! I spent so much time as a child learning how to hold my breath underwater for long(ish) periods of time, then I get given snorkelling equipment and I'm expected to breath underwater????? Took a lot of getting used to, not to mention the fact that I was getting freaked out any time a fish came close but it was very cool!
Next trip was down to Wellington to see Apollo 13 at the Downstage Theatre (this was the show I worked on when it was in Auckland last August). We flew down on the first flight from Auckland which was EARLY but we did soooo much in one day - met friends for breakfast, saw the parliament building, went up on the cable car, walked through the Botanic Gardens and went to Te Papa museum - and that was all before the show!!!! The show was really fantastic and I finally got to sit in the console seats and actually be a part of the show!!
Day 2 of the Wellington trip was another very early morning to travel back to Auckland - we were going back up on the Overlander which is a train that runs most of the length of the North Island, and although it takes 12 hours the scenery was just incredible and totally totally worth it!
Christchurch came about 3 weeks after Wellington, and it was AWESOME. It is such a nice city and really pretty. It's very chilled out and totally a place to relax and soak up some culture. While I was there I went to the museum, art gallery, botanic gardens and arts precinct. I ate some great food, had a few drinks, walked down by the river... It has a really nice feel to the place and since its only an hour and a bit flight from Auckland I'll definitely be going back down at some point!
Just last weekend I took a couple of days off work and went up north to Paihia - I've been before but I was specifically going up to go on an overnight cruise called The Rock. I'd heard from a girl I met in a backpackers last year that it was one of the best things in NZ to do so I decided I should go do it!! At 4pm I boarded the boat and got shown to my room (the boat is set up with dorm rooms like a backpackers) then it was time to get a drink from the bar. Once we set off on the cruise part, we firstly did some target shooting off the back of the boat with rifles shooting at a plastic duck called Matilda. Carrying on with the animal theme, it was then time for fishing - attempting to catch some food for the bbq that night! Nobody caught anything but it was good fun and a first for me!! Luckily, the boat crew had back up food of sausages, steaks and salad so we didn't starve :-). After dinner we got the chance to do night kayaking which of course I did - it was INCREDIBLE. The stars were covering the sky, it was pitch black and the most amazing thing was that the phosphorescence in the water made everything glow a bright blue. We went out in groups of 10 and although you couldn't see where anyone was, you could see the paddles glowing as they went through the water.
Day 2 began with breakfast made by the crew, then a short cruise to one of the outer islands to go to the beach, and a chance for me to do yet more kayaking!! Then it was gentle cruise back to Paihia. The whole trip was ace and is another thing I would love to do again.
And that's brought me up to date with the travelling!!! I'm busy at work with the Comedy Fest at the moment but once thats done, who knows where will be next!! Enjoy the photos - more will come soon :-) xx
