Hola!
It´s Thursday evening here in Costa Rica and we have just finished an afternoon shift at the orphanage. Not the easiest of afternoons as I think this morning I had the worst hangover I have ever had!
Yesterday was our Tico mum Marita´s birthday. Josh and I got back from the orphanage yesterday feeling absoltely nackered after a morning of running around after all 15 kids due to them not being at school. Josh made them a racetrack on the floor out of masking tape, which kept them entertained for an hour or so but they were so energetic and excited to all be together that it was difficult keeping their attention for any longer! We managed to get a group of them sitting down and doing some Art that we are planning to mount and put up on the wall later in the week. So...by the time we had left and had some lunch we were more than ready for a ´Siesta!´
In the afternoon we slept a little back at the house and then in the evening our Tico family invited some friends around and we sat in the garden under the stilts to the house where Edgar...out Tico dad, had an amazing Fire stove that they had made and was their version of a BBQ! but better! As usual we started drinking almost straight away and within half an hour between the 6 of us we had polished off a bottle of the local liqour that Josh and I had bought Marita for her birthday. Once everyone else arrived the drinks kept on flowing and you were never allowed your glass empty! We had a great night! And met some really cool people and a couple of the younger people spoke English so it was nice to be able to hold a long conversation that didn´t involve hand gestures! Edgar cooked some Pork...which I think was similar to Pork Crackling that we have back home...it looked horrible! Luckily Josh and I had created a system where we could sneak it into a folded napkin, in our back pocket and then in the bin in our room! Later in the evening he cooked other meats which were a little nicer and helped to soak up all the alcohol. After the food Joanne, Marita and Edgars daughter brought out Maritas birthday cake and we sang ´Feliz Cumpleanous´in Spanish. The tradition then is to crack an egg on the birthday girls head...something Marita had explained to me that she was dreading all night! But luckily for her they had blown out the inside of the egg and just cracked the shell on her head! Throughout the evening it all got very merry! And I have never drank so many shots in one go...so was not suprised this morning when I couldn´t figure out where I was and then threw up in the toilet! Hehee! I am never drinking AGAIN!
We had a lie in this morning, then lot´s of Coffee...and then Maritas nephew ´Husas´came round for me to give him a little English lesson. He is fourteen years old, just started college and very cheeky! I have a little crush! His English is really good though and his reading is incredible! It´s nice to work with him as he helps my conversational Spanish as he can correct me and explain in English, so it works very well!
This afternoon at the orphanage was very difficult! But luckily the children were in the mood to draw so it eased our hungover heads a little as we got them relatively quiet and working! Few...! We also made masks with them...which resulted in them being covered head to toe in glitter, but it was lots of fun!
Tomorrow we have work in the morning and then we are catching the Bus to the Pacific Coastal town of ´Samara´ to soak up some more sun and swim and snorkal in the sea! We have three nights there and have booked a nice hotel on the beach! I cannot wait to get in the water. We are back in Palmares on Monday morning for our final four days on our Project. I cannot imagine saying goodbye to the children! Maybe I could take them with me!
Adios for now! x
