Today we set off for Zadar - a beautiful seaside town with roman influences - we were here last time we came to Croatia & thought it would be nice to stay here for a few days.
On the way through to Rijeka a very large seaside town, really more like a city, we stopped off for a coffee where we had a beautiful view over towards Otok Cres (Cres Island) & watched the ferry move slowly form the island to the mainland. This place looked like one where we could spend a couple of nights just taking in the fresh sea air & sights. After a short drive down to some apartments we changed our minds. There was no access to the beach & it was crucial that we swim as the weather was still terribly hot - so off we went.
Whilst on the Autoput we checked our proposed driving distances & decided we would not take on the 400km round trip just to stay in Zadar. Instead we phoned Biserka, my cousin's wife & asked if we could arrive earlier than previously discussed & we headed towards Zagreb instead.
It was great to see Ivan, Biserka & their son's Stjepan, Marin & wife Valentina & their 10 month old boy, Florijan. They are all well including dad's brother who is now a great grandfather but doesn't know it as he has Alzheimer's. Florijan the babe is quite a character, full of beans & most entertaining.
It's now time to catch up with dad's family & a couple of mum's.
It also time for meat & more meat. Those of you who aren't aware, the Croatians love their meat, pork, beef, lamb, chicken & many other varieties, including Bambi stew and occasionally pheasant - both killed in the surrounding countryside. Robin Hood should have lived here - there are no restrictions on wild game. I forgot to mention the home smoked prosciutto & sausages from home grown pork.
By the way the weather has changed - it's raining here & a bit cooler than the last 3-4 weeks have been. It's quite a pleasant change from the intense heat of the last 15 days - mostly 40 degrees & over.
