Christina´s Extraordinary Adventures Abroad!
Alright...well an update from the weekend!
Friday July 7:
We didn't do much that night. We were gonna go to tango lessons but ventured out to eat on Avenida Corrientes...which is like the Broadway of Buenos Aires. I was definitley impressed and we ate at a really nice restaurant and found out that here instead of having tax on everything...that when you eat inside most restuarants they charge you just for using the table and stuff. RETARDED!! I was not happy about this! But oh well. Sometimes I forget that things are in pesos here which is a realy good exchange rate for us because its a little more than 3 pesos for every 1 US dollar. But regardless I have become a bit cheaper here...and at times have to remind myself how cheap it really is. We wandered around some new parts of the city we hadn't seen before and ended up at a HUGE bookstore that was once a theatre...so it was gorgeous inside. My host mom asked me what we did that night because I didn't get home until late...but really we just wondered around...but it was fun.
Saturday July 8:
We woke up early this morning and went to Teatro Colon to take a tour inside. We met up with a bunch of other exchange students and took the tour in English. It was absolutly amazing but stunk because we could only take pictures on the first level before taking the tour....and those pictures don't even do it justice...I bought a postcard of what the inside of the actual theatre looked like so I could show everyone...we got to sit in there and listen as the orchestra rehearsed...that was amazing!! Then we went underground to the rehearsal rooms and got to see the professional dancers practicing ballet...they had an old man instructor who reminded me of Mr. Harris. LOL...for those of you who don't know that was an old ballet instructor of me and Ashley's...he was crazy...haha. We got to see where they made the backdrops and scenery and costumes and props...it really was amazing! Afterwards we took the bus to La Boca...it is a pretty sketch part of town but very touristsy at the same time...known for its Bohemian type of environment with amazing colorful houses, market shops, and street performers. It was sooo much fun! We took alot of histerical pictures and saw some funny things! After a few hours there is started to look like it was gonna storm so we got back on the bus to head back to town...and sure enough the rain came AGAIN!!..the weather sucks!!...we stopped off at Avenida Corrientes again to buy tickets for The Producers....its in spanish but oh well....Drew and I got 5th row center tickets for less than $30US for this Thursday night. After we bought those we headed to a little cafe called Havanna. Those are really popular here and we have always heard that they have amazing coffee. So we walk in a sit right next to the door....PREPARE YOURSELVES....here comes a kindof scary story....since I was a kid my parents have always when we go to a restaurant they sit facing the door...no matter what...well since they always do it...when Im not with them I usually do that too...well yesterday I didn't. We were sitting there and one of the girls sitting in front of me had this weird look on her face so I turned around and saw this guy like messing with the door from the inside. He couldn't lock it without a key...but I really wasn't sure what he was doing...when all of the sudden this family across the cafe gets up and runs out and then from outside the cafe is motioning something to the waitress and then runs away. Well we are kindof freaked out but not really sure whats going on and don't want to appear too freaked out to bring attention to ourselves. So then a cop walks in and asks the waitress what happened and they are all talking really fast but basically the waitress is like nothing is wrong and that she didn't know why the people freaked out. So another family who walked in after all of this over hears people talking about it and they run out too so we get our money out ready to pay and Lori...the girl sitting in front of me...tells me that when that guy got up and was messing with the door that he motioned to his friend who then went behind the counter towards the workers. So while we are paying we ask the waitress what happened and she tells us that the man was going to smoke (which I didn't believe because he closed the door and looked like he was trying to lock it....he never opened it) and that he didnt want to smoke infront of the children with that family but when he went to the door they thought the store was getting robbed and ran out and ran to the police. Well basically after she told me this we got the heck out of there because the guys were still in there and I have no doubt in my mind that they were about to get robbed and that maybe the one waitress was in on it...because she saw the guy behind the counter and it didn't even phase her...I was sooo mad at myself afterwards that I just wanted to scream....ever since I have been here I am the one who is always making sure we aren't doing things to bring attention to us and being aware of my surroundings as daddy reminds me daily...but this one time that I wasn't paying attention and sat with my back directly towards the door we almost got robbed!!.....OMG!!!! BUT we are ok...nothing happened...and we went home. I told my host home that the day was good except for the end and she just assumed I had been robbed...and when I told her the story she didn't act surprised at all...apparently its a common thing here...Note to you all...if I get robbed...I will be on the next plane home...because I will be DEVESTATED!!!
Sunday July 9:
Today we went with some people from our group CCIS to the Ferria de Mataderos. IT was forever away but oh so worth it!!! Basically it is a HUGE fair/market thing with all kinds of typical Argentine food and crafts. Basically like the ideal place to buy souveniours and eat GOOD food! I bought gifts for all of my family...which is a freaking lot of people...but hopefully everyone will like the things I got...otherwise I will just keep them all for me!! We had the best ice cream (Dulce de Leche...I haven't told yall about this yet but basically it is amazing and is about as addictive as drugs down here...lol...it is similar to caramel but different. Its hard to explain but don't worry I will be bringing some of it home...I put it on my toast every morning and they have everything that comes in that flavor...from coffee to ice cream to cookies. It is HEAVENLY!!!)
Side Note: Thank goodness Drew brought another suitcase for stuff because I was literally at the weight limit on mine and cannot put another thing in mine. So I have to use his to get my stuff to Ecuador...then once I can empty out all the toys for the orphanage I will be good to go.
Since we only have 2 more weeks left we will be doing fun exciting stuff everyday this week so I will try and update more often...so that these things aren't forever long! Well I hope everyone enjoys the pics and reads all of this...I love you all and miss yall!
