Today is my last full day in Rome and I think Im just about ready to move on. Ive taken 2 guided tours of Rome. One was a brief overview of the entire Roman history in 3 hours which we did while walking around Circus Maximus, the Jewish Quarter, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Palazzo Venezia. The next day I did a tour of the Vatican and we were told the background of all of the artwork in the Vatican museums and about the Catholic church and St Peters Basilica. The tours were very interesting because I know that if I just walked around Rome and looked at things, I wouldnt be half as impressed or interested. Yesterday I did m own thing and walked around to a number of the famous piazzas, such as Piazza Navona, Piazza Campo dei Fiori, Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna. I also saw the Trevi Fountain, walked up the Spanish Steps and had a nap on a bench in the Villa Borghese gardens, because thats just what you do in the afternoon in Europe when its stinking hot but theres nothing to do at the hostel yet.
By the way, I think that Australia should invest in more fountains. I know theres always a drought and I did my thesis on water management but they make a city so much more pretty. And in summer you can stick your feet in them, which is what everyone does in Italy.
I dont have a whole lot to do today but I think Ill go and visit some churches. I probably shouldnt do that on a Sunday because theyre not officially open to visitors during their services. If I spoke Italian, Id be interested to sit in on a Catholic mass but Im fairly sure I wont have a clue what was going on because I dont.
Arrivederci for now,
Cheryl
