Hello!
In the photo is a view of the Brandenburg Gate which we didn't see yesterday. This was partly because it was mid-afternoon and partly because there was some kind of election policy demonstration on in front of it. East Germany deserves minimum wages! Anyway, Sonja and I arrived in Berlin on Thursday night after a 6 hour train trip from Amsterdam. We did make it out of there alive after a very tense few days riding bikes around the streets. We were very proud of our sense of direction though. We did get to know there area where we were staying pretty well, which is good because on the last night our map disappeared from the basket at the front of my bike, mid-ride, never to be seen again.
Amsterdam is smaller city and there wasn't all that many sights to see but it had a relaxing atmosphere and seemed very peaceful (if you weren't near a road) and the people were all very friendly (and mostly spoke English!).
Since arriving in Berlin we've also taken it easy because we have 7 days to fill and there aren't too many museums that we want to see. It's mostly monuments and things that take longer to walk to than to acually spend time seeing. Ahhh, walking in Berlin. Not a favourite topic of ours. Having been backpacking for 2 months, we're both fairly confident with a map but we have gotten disorentated so many times here and it's because there are NO STREET SIGNS AT INTERSECTIONS. Soooo, we have to keep walking until we find one and then realise we've gone the wrong way and walk all the way back and not know which direction we're facing because there still aren't any street signs to tell us. We also passed one intersection with 3 street signs pointing in 3 different directions, but all called Mollstraße.
Anyway, enough ranting. We did a walking tur yesterday and saw lots of things like the Brandenburg Gate, the Book Burning Square (Bebelplatz), the Holocaust Memorial, the remains of the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag, the Berliner Dom and the Tv Tower (Fernsehturm, I think is the German name).
More updates later!
