Chris still had the hump about me losing my new gloves this morning, he ended up dragging me into every shop we went into yesterday to see if they were handed in, they weren't so I got another pair, made of real nice sheep skin!
Afterwards we checked in for our jet boat and canyon swing tour, the reception desk was in the same cool shop that sold the Nevis Bungy! We only waited fifteen minutes then a guy came to take us to the river, we were going on the jet boat first. I felt nervous all the way there, not because of the jet boat ride I was nervous of the swing after, Chris had a smile on his face, he was so excited and couldn't wait! I looked around and noticed everyone else in the van looked excited too!
When we arrived at the river we were quickly instructed to collect water proof jackets from a hut and put them on. Everyone had theirs on while I was still struggling to pull the ginormous thing over me! The guide said they work a lot better if they cover you all up, he said the wind chill and spray from the river would be -10 degrees today! We quickly made sure our hats, scarfs and gloves were tightly on.
It was a sunny day but that didn't make the river look any warmer, we waited while a boat with people in came rushing around the corner of some rocks and then finished up where we were standing. They all looked really excited, laughing and thanking the guides for the thrilling ride they just had. Then it was our turn, me and Chris grabbed the back seats while the rest filled out the front. Our guide turned around to us and warned us to keep hold of our hats as he was going to reach speeds up to 85kph! We held on tightly then shot over the river, the first thing we noticed was how cold the air was on our faces so we pulled our hats down lower and our scarfs up higher. The speed we were going at forced us back into our seats, it was really fun, the best bits were when our guide drove the jet boat so close around rocky corners of the canyon that for a moment everyone was sure we were going to crash! Then in the more open areas of the river our guide signalled to us he was going to spin the boat so we held on tightly as we spun 360 degrees, it was so exciting except for the part where we got a face full of water. Some areas of the canyon were so shallow that we could feel the rocks and stones scraping underneath the boat! Then the boat slowed down and our guide turned around to give us a couple of facts, like the jet boat was designed to move over water as shallow as only 10cm deep! Then he pointed out some old carts and wagons along the river which were left there during the mining days and some people still find gold in the river! Then he did a couple more 360 degree spins before taking us back through the canyon towards where we started. The boat ride lasted about twenty to thirty minutes, unfortunately we couldn't take our camera but after finishing the ride we guessed why, we would have surely lost it! When we got back we dropped our stuff off and walked up to the office to warm up, our faces were freezing! We checked out our photos that had been taken by the staff along the riverside, Chris thinks the real reason why we couldn't take our camera was so we bought their photos, but to be fair they were pretty good so we did buy them. We decided not to buy the DVD though, the camera on the boat had steamed up so it was s***. We got three printed photos, two post cards and an information DVD which we will probably never watch. I managed to convince Chris to buy a scarf too while we were there, I think after the cold ride he realised he could do with one.
We sat around and waited for our pick up for the canyon swing, Chris was really looking forward to it, I was a little nervous but excited at the same time, just then the van turned up.
As soon as we arrived at the jump location we both desperately needed the toilet, the nerves were really kicking in by now! We had to go in a really smelly hut with a deep hole in the floor that hung over the cliff. I made the mistake of looking down the hole, I'd never seen a bigger pile of s*** before! I held my breath and got out of there as soon as I could!
Me, Chris and two young boys with their parents walked along a narrow path along the side of the cliff down to the jump office. There we signed some papers, got weighed and then had our harnesses fitted. We walked around the small office looking at photos on the wall of previous jumpers, a few were celebrities from all around the world and others were in fancy dress. Seeing their excited faces and written comments made us feel more excited and we felt ready to go. There were also photos of different jump examples, like sitting in a chair, hanging upside down, back flips and the tandem jump. We had already decided we were going to do the tandem jump together. Just then the staff asked us who wanted to go first and Chris immediately told them we did! I didn't argue, I thought it would be better to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. The staff were making sarcastic jokes and trying to make us more nervous the whole time we were on the platform with them. To be honest neither of us were actually listening to them, we were more concerned about the jump we were about to do. I could feel my heart beginning to race as we shuffled closer to the edge, Chris was holding on tight to me and I was doing the same to him. He looked over the edge at the 109m drop, he later told me he wasn't that bothered about it, while I had buried my face into his chest, avoiding the scenery as much as possible! This was supposed to be a warm up for the Nevis Bungy jump but I wasn't even trying, I kept one foot behind me and kept my face hidden until Chris started to count to three. By then I couldn't speak, I knew what was coming next and there was no turning back, even if I wanted to back out now I couldnt, I knew Chris would dragg me over the edge with him and that's exactly what he did! I felt the weight of Chris pull me over the edge and for three long seconds I let out a terrified scream! The adrenaline was pumping through both of us as we swung across the canyon, then all the fear and nervousness dissapeared from us and we were feeling the rush of excitement! It felt like we were flying as we swung back and forth for a moment while the staff pulled us back up. I said to Chris we should go again but upside down this time! Then as we were climbing higher and higher to the platform where it all began, I suddenly felt nervous again, I held onto my harness and the rope tightly until the staff pulled us back on. Not before terrorising us both by leaving us dangling over the edge. I realised then that I would not like to do it again, especially upside down!
As soon as we were unclipped and off the platform we felt safe again and could really enjoy the experience we just had. We waited to watch the next kid go, he had chosen to fall backward while sitting in a chair! He's much braver than I was and dumber at the same time, the guys on the platform teased the hell out of the kid for at least five minutes, they were really cruel to him! The boy was shouting at them "I hate you!" begging them to get on with it and let him go. In the end they did and it looked like an awesome jump...for him.
We had our harnesses taken off, then watched a video of our jump and took a look at our photos, they were really cool so we bought the whole pack. After everyone had jumped we got dropped back into town at about 1:30pm. We used the Internet and computers at the office to watch our DVDs and to email the photos to our iPad. I felt a lot more confident about doing the Nevis Bungy now so we went straight to the office and booked it for tomorrow morning.
Once we were back in our camper we made lunch and chilled out for a bit watching tv. A little later we had a couple of drinks with dinner then decided to go out for more. We started in one bar which was nice but Chris got fixated watching rugby on the tv, he wasn't talking to me so I made him leave and we went to the bar next door. It wasn't great in there but we got a free Jack and Coke each, once we finished them we left and walked around town to find a better bar. Most of them were too expensive or very quiet so we ended up in the bar we started in.
After too many rum and cokes each we walked back up to our camper van and carried on drinking even more before heading to bed around midnight.
