After reading some reviews on the Egouts tour (the Paris sewer and catacomb tours) we decided that most likely Dania would have nightmares the rest of the trip and Emma probably wouldn't find the bones of over 6 million people that were exumed during the building of the Paris subway (and saved in the catacombs) particularly interesting and the sewer tour it was noted could be "smelly'. Zach of course we thought would find all of this interesting, but we erred on the side of dictatorship and decided to go to Invalides. Invalides was once a hospital for wounded soldiers in the time of Louis XIV. It also holds the tomb of Napoleon I, which we thought would pique Zach's interest in this over the Egouts. It was a wonderful museum and one of the less popular so it was not crowded. Besides housing the tomb of Napoleon I, his son and several family members, it has an extensive display of cannons, armor, swords, spears, hand guns and rifles from the 18th and 19th century. Magnefique!
Our next stop (since we had a guide) was the Pompidou Center. For those of you not familiar with Paris, this is the museum for modern art (something Parisians are not very fond of) and the building is very modern in a neighborhood and city that is known for it's centuries old architecture and art. Everything that one would normally find in a building to make the building function is on the outside. The escalators are in tubes of different colors and the piping for the plumbing, air conditioning and heating are all twisting and turning along the outside. Again very industrial and modern. We decided to head to the permanent exhibit of artists famous between 1900-1975 which included Picasso, Miro, Le Corbusier, Warhol, duBuffet, Man Ray (a painting, unusual) and Giacometti. The kids however were done with museums so while we would have like to have seen more we cut our visit short.
Finally we headed to Angelina's, which is famous for it's hot chocolate (africa style) which is thick and rich but not to sweet, and desserts. The kids and I each ordered a hot chocolate, which is served in a pitcher and I would recommend if anyone finds themselves at Angelina's they order one for every two people, and everyone ordered a dessert. By the time we were done tasting each dessert and drinking, we were all feeling like beached whales with no beach in sight. It was fantastique! After trying to walk off some of the calories we opted to skip dinner and head to the park near our apartment. The kids played and Andrew, Linsey and I sat and enjoyed the evening. We headed home around 9:00, put the kids to bed and the adults had a light dinner of salad, veggies and a little cheese and bread. Tomorrow we are off to Giverny to see Monet's house and gardens. Bon soir!
