Cass's Gap Year
hey everyone.. so first journal entry since i began my homeestay!!!! wow so quite a week. i already explained my family but they are really nice!! my one brother, bryan, goes to san isidro for la universidad a lot during the week and he came with me and lissie today!! it was really sweet he walked us down the mountain the whole way while we tried to talk to him (didnt do toooo bad a job either) which was probably about an hours walk. Normally he just rides his motorcycle down (everyone here has them) but my mom made him to walk with us. haha i dont think he minded too much though, hes really sweet. My little brother is cute too. hes fourteen but hes really small. My mom, at least one brother, and I play cards almost every night. I taught them both how to play war and go fish (fans of both) and they taught me a bunch of games (some of which i still dont understand!) I must say my brother trying to say war has got to be one of the funniest things ive seen in awhile... the W sound does not come easy in a spanish speaking country. o yeah and im pretty kickass at dominoes!! i pretty much dominated today when we played before we left for san isidro. My mom is great too. she talks reaaaally fast and i cant always understand her but we still communicate pretty well. shes a little shy but shes warmed up to me really well. She is even fine with me running in the mornings and has tried to get me more veggies and fruits!! Its awesome. ahh and she calls me chicatica or something like that i dont know its really sweet. My room is really nice and i have a whole dresser to myself and bed and everything. Its definitley more than i had hoped for. As for the shower its not so much hot as just not freezing cold, but thats actually not that big a deal its really hot. Hace calor todos los dias aqui y una ducha fresca es bien. Lissie's family is good too!! Her mom adoresss her and her dad is adorable. I'm pretty much in love with them both.
Okay so want to know about the teaching?! its actually really great. The first day was kind of rough because we didnt know it but we actually have to teach for TWO hours instead of one! this was kind of a shock becasue we had only planned for one so we just had them draw pictures of everything they wanted to know how to say in english. It actually worked out but it was definitley terrifying. The next day went great though. We taught the ABC's in english and they were all singing by the end of class. Its so hard because we're supposed to teach only in english but we're doing really well. Its actually easier than youd think once you start getting hte hang of it and sometimes you have to use spanish because its just impossible to explain what they should do without it. Our students are adorable!! Never in my life have i gotten so many presents. One boy brought us homemade cheese from his mom a couple days ago!! hahaa we had no idea what to do with it and it looked a little less than appetizing but it was sooo sweet. We have this girl wendy, whos in first grade and possibly one of the cutest most energetic girls in the world, who gives us candy everyday haha, then today we got jello (from cheeseboy again) flowers (from this little girl pamela in 3rd grade) stickers (from the love of my life kevin in first grade) and candy (from katherine in 5th) Seriously i could get used to it haha .. no but they are just the sweetest kids in the world. Me and lissie are having such a good time with them. Its awesome cause our class is so small so we can really get to know and work with them all. We have 2 kids in first grade (who me and lissie are already planning the wedding for) 2 in second (Jetson and Pamela) 2 in third (Jorgito and Josue) 3 in fourth (Selena, Priscila, and Gerald) and 2 in fifth (Miller and Katherine) Me and lissie have nicknames for them all already its so much fun. They all really want to learn too, they yell english whenever we're about to teach, its amazing. The teacher here is so sweet too! she really wants them to learn english and is trying herself. its great her name is Nuria and all the kids call her Niña. i love it.. ive even started calling her niña. The cook at the school is great too. shes probably one of my favorite people so far. She has the most adorable daughter and is pregnant again... she talks really slowly for us and went and bought me a ton of food when she found out i was a vegetarian. everyone is so accomadating here. its like i feel like im getting hugs everywhere i go. i wish my mom was a little more open but i think that will come. (ps grant she thinks youre really attractive and you look like one of the guys on this soap opera she watches religiously like every night haha)
I have so much to tell everyone its so hard to get it all down here!! i played soccer and rode a horse and next week i might work in the coffee fields!! its so crazy. At times its overwhelming and the language thing gets hard after awhile because there are ALOT of dicho ticos (costa rican sayings and words) that i dont understand at all, pero el tiempo decira.
I miss everyone soooooooooooooooo much !! its really great here though and i hope everyone is happy and healthy and having fun ( but not toooooo much ) without me. i love you =)
