Abit of normality, more temples, a keg of beer, cheap taxis, Hard Rock Cafe and a Sky Bar!
Bangkok, Thailand
We treated ourselves to a little lie in this morning after an early yet hunger over start yesterday. We had the day already planned out the day, so were right on it!
We first headed to Khao San road, to get a new mini backpack for the plane. Our little fold away backpack from Trespass had been overloaded a few too many times and had opened up a few too many holes! Time to be replaced. We stopped and had a quick snack, the strangest tuna/mayo sandwich ever and off we went. We managed to get a lovely little elephant backpack for 400 baht about £8, it was an ideal size and reminded us of the backpack from Tots TV! Sack Magique, sack magique!
After a short walk we arrived at Wat Pho, a nice temple on huge grounds holding the biggest Buddha we've seen yet. Although this buddha was led down absolutely loving life, chilling to the max! It took us around an hour to walk around, we took a lot of pictures then headed for the pier for the ferry over to Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn). We had to walk through a mini seafood, street food market into the pier. The smell was crazy, fresh fish, dried fish an all kinds of food everywhere. Definitely got your taste buds going. The ferry was only 3 baht each, BARGAIN! So we all huddled onto the boat and off it went, the water way was so busy! Long boats flying past, tug boats pulling 4/5 storage boats too. Ferry took not even 3 minutes to get across.
Once we got across we were greeted by a load of street sellers trying to get you to have pictures in traditional thai clothing etc. Boat tours, food and the usual souvenirs. Wat Arun was right next to the pier, so we paid our 100 baht and got involved. You could actually climb Wat Arun, obviously would be rude not too. We didn't realise that the steps were like a foot each and at like 60 degree incline, going up wasn't to bad it just made coming down exciting. The view from the second story was awesome, we could see the Grand Palace and that from there also right along the river. The Temple Of Dawn is currently undergoing renovation work so would be great to see it once its all completed. So a little about the walk back down…. there was a big group of girls ummm and ammming about the incline. So James just went for it expecting me to follow, I bottled it, then got stuck behind this group of girls. He had quite a laugh at all of them and then my little head poking over and saying 'Im scared!'
Tonight we were treating ourselves abit, we were heading to Siam Square to go to Hard Rock Cafe and then to a Sky Bar. So we dressed up a little, hair done, make up done and feeling funky fresh. We grabbed a taxi and made sure he put the meter on, it took around 3 taxis to pass before we found one who would actually put it on, 61 baht later and we had pulled up outside Siam Square. We had a little look through the market and then eventually stumbled across the holy grail! Hard Rock Cafe Bangkok, oh how we have missed food like this.
Once we got inside, we were seated quickly and didn't mess around ordering drinks. We opted for a keg of Singha, 2 litres of ice cold beer, happy days! The food order wasn't hard also, James went for the 10oz Ultimate Burger and I had the pulled pork sandwich (standard) we decided to go half and half, but James ended up with most of it, greedy git! ha ha
Ive gotta say it was unreal, was so good to have the taste of pulled pork back in our lives. Thai food is unreal, but you cant beat abit of pulled pork. If Grill Stock and Atomic burger fancy some new branches in Thailand, they would be onto a winner!
After smashing back our food and the beer we started our little trek to the sky bar. It was about a 10 minute walk away so we had a little nose around Siam Paragon on our way. This place is awesome, its like the posh shop of Bangkok. A little bit of heaven for Kara! You can buy anything pretty much in there, they even have a harrods inside. It actually made a little short cut for us to walk through Siam, we left out just past the car park. It was awesome! R8, R8 spyders, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Porsches you name it. A lot of money rolling around here!
We got to the hotel and had to take two lifts to the Sky bar, one to the Sky bar lobby on the 23rd floor and then one up to the Red Sky bar! Once we arrived we were escorted to the sky bar and admired the view. It was amazing, you could see bright lights for miles and miles. Being 55 stories up, it didn't actually feel that cold either. When we arrived we struggled to get a seat, so ended up standing for a while. It was rather expensive, 290 (£5.80) baht for a small Chang and 490(£9.80) baht for a glass of Pinot Grigio. Where as we've been paying as little as £1 for a Chang. But the view was worth it, definitely an experience we will ever forget. We ended up getting seat half way through our first drinks, two nice comfy to chill out maxin relaxin on! We ended up ordering two more drinks (cocktails this time) and stayed for about 2 hours, we couldn't get wifi so couldn't Skype anyone… LITTER!!
Once we left, absolutely buzzing from the experience we headed outside for a taxi. We were greeted by a lovely little man with his taxi like it was from 2 fast 2 furious. Green neons everywhere! Thinking we must be stupid quoted us 500 baht to get back to our hotel, we literally laughed in his face and walked off. We now know why he can afford so many neons with prices like that. We soon got another taxi and 61 baht later we were back at our hotel. Quick stop off at 7 eleven for refreshments and we were ready to hit the sack for our day of travelling again tomorrow.
Check out our blog tomorrow and see how were getting on in Chiang Mai! Lets hope the beer and cocktails tonight don't leave us feeling hungover for it….
J&K over and out!
