Thai Belly, Weird coach drivers, beetle infested toilets & near death accidents.
Ban Lin Chang, Thailand
So we havent blogged for 3 days - We have a lot to catch up on!
8th Nov - We didnt blog because James was in bed all day with Thai belly. I have nothing more to say on this matter. It took atleast 16 hours for his body to hold onto any from of fluid, sick sweat, s*** and piss ha ha! Although I actually had peace and quiet for once
(oh by the way I forgot to add on this day we were supposed to be staying at a 5 star floating hotel in Kanchanaburi, but obvs James couldnt travel for 3 hours without needing the toilet or staying awake so I had to cancel this, they would not give me a refund, how rude!)
9th - We took a long coach journey from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and the coach driver (it was actually a weird local Thai minibus) Well he thought he was a pimp.
He spoke on the phone to what we can only presume was several different ladies the whole 2 hours! And very loudly aswell! V ANNOYING, I dont know what he was saying, I dont even know if it was a recognised language, some very weird sounds (maybe he was one of those phone sex hotlines??) If I spoke Thai I would have definitly told him to be quiet.
We got to our hostel 'U Dee & Coffee' Which I had slagged of since forever as I had originally booked The River Kwai Resort & Spa to which James thought didnt sound travelling enough so he booked this hostel instead, but I have to say for like a tenner a night, at our cheapest place, it is actually one of the best we've stayed in... (BOSSED IT!! - James) Which brings me to today.
10th Nov - Safari volunteer day wooo! (well you would think so)
We started the morning early so we had enough time to get organised because if you know me I am always late! We went down the road to hire our mopeds - I got a lovely little yellow one. yay.
Packed our bags and went on our way... well nearly.
Apart from I got on my moped (having never ridden one before) and crashed it into a wall.... at speed from standstill (she was manouvering in a corridoor)! and the moped fell optop of me (much to James amusement now) he did actually have to dismount his moped, remove one of two backpacks before actually being able to save me, not the most convenient time to have an accident if at all. Well now I have the biggest bruise I have ever seen completely taking over my knee, and for a place which is hot, makes shorts very difficult to wear!
Anyway after I cried and James managed to reassure me, we went to meet our safari peeps to ride in convoy to the safari zoo. Here we managed to play with some one month old leopard cubs (Kelly and Helen) whilst we were waiting, they were so small and cute! One was really active and mischievious and the other was grumpy and lazy lol. So then we hit the road, 18 miles to the safari park.
We got there eventually and were introduced to the other people in the Rescue team we would be working with, we then went around to see all the rescue animals. They have 4 wild leopards saved from capitivity, one was really old and literally looked like a Disney Villian!! lol there was also the most amazing little bear ever, he was born premature so was a little slow. He loved to suck his thumb, its a comfort thing for them. I managed to feed a monkey called Gramps. He was old and had kidney failure but he was lovely! He didnt like carrots though... would literally take them an throw them down in disgust! ha ha
There was a naughty little gibbon called Chutney, he would like to jump against the side of his enclosure to scare people and then grab there arms. He was adorable though and would love to show off :-) They had some little jackals, a selection of bunnys, and a load more monkeys too and some bald macaws??? Very strange.
After a few hours lugging wood and sh**t around we finally got taken to our 'room'.... by this point we had been at the park for about 4/5 hours and hadnt even been offered a drink! DEHYDRATED MUCH????
I cried as soon as I walked in.
Now, I may like the finer things in life but this was something else & i really wish I would have taken a picture but that was the last thing on my mind!! Because I was too busy sobbing....
There was a matress on the floor..... just a matress and as soon as I walked in a lizard crawled up the wall (i was told to get used to it) and then i walked into the bathroom to a massive BEETLE! Right next to the loo.... as if I could ever use that loo again! I know it was a volunteer programme so i wasnt expecting luxury but i was expecting not to be staring at a beetle whilst have a wee. we were also warned about scorpions and leaving clothes etc on the floor, but we literally had nowhere to hang anything?? lol
So we left in our own little 2 man convoy and headed straight for refreshments!
& i'm very sorry for any volunteer enthusiasts this may upset but I really dont care.
Have any of you actually felt a mosquito peirce your skin?! Like an injection..?! No I hear you say?! Well guess what i did, right in chest!
And have any of you had a bug as big as your first fall onto your boob.. no?! Well I have! All in the space of a couple of hours.
I am not high mantinance but I know my human rights.
So I was happy, we were finally on our way back into Kanchanaburi only hoping that 'U dee & coffee' have a room spare! & I have a near death experience.. I loose complete control of my bike, Like seriously. And I come to terms with the fact I am going to crash and this is going to hurt. But all of a sudden it stops...I could not believe it!! I did have a captain american charm strapped to my bag so I definitly think it was that that saved me. Or maybe just the fact i'm an awesome driver?! I seen james turn off and I was worried he didnt see me and I would end up stranded and lost, then next thing I know he's rocked up next to me :-) He slowly helped me to pull over by a little bench and compose myself for a short while as I was clearly traumatised. The rest of the 20 miles back I drove 10 MPH but carried on as it was getting darker
So here we are, sat in the delightful 'U dee & coffee'... On a bed!!
And quite excited for some temple visiting tomorrow.
J&K Over & Out x
