So after our night dancing away at the Neighbours night to Dr Carl and Paul Robinson we settled into our new hostel 'The Ritz'. We had a week here and it was a quick effort to find somewhere to live and a job!!! Its sad that the travelling bit has come to an end for the moment but we really like staying in Melbourne. We are staying in a place called St Kilda- full of entertainment and lots going on, it has a beach and lovely pier as well- we love it!! We are looking to stay in Melbourne for 3-4 months to find work and save for our next bit of the trip. The hostel was quite nice, full of long stay people so it was a bit hard to make new friends but they did movie nights/ free BBQ's and lots more so we cant complain. We literally spent the whole time searching on the internet and praying something would come up soon. We found a room for $18 a night just for a week because he had someone moving in so we jumped on the train to Chadstone and met Vladimir from Latvia. He was really nice and showed us around his house and we decided straight away to move in the following Monday. We made the most of our time left in St Kilda by walking along the pier watching all the star fish, people fishing, the sun setting on Melbourne in the distance and the jet skis. Its typical that on our last night at the hostel we met some people and had a good night drinking the famous 'GOON". Now goon at home is simply boxed wine but in oz its called that because the silver bag is like a pillow and the aboriginals called a pillow a 'goon'!! Basically its the cheapest stuff for us backpackers and its lethal! That night we went to talk to Mum on Skype were she was preparing an Easter meal for the Bibbys and The Haugheys- she put the Sunday roast on the web cam to tease us- that was seriously mean!!!!!!!
As you can imagine the day after we felt rough and it was time to move all our stuff an hour away to Vladimirs house. It was a painful walk from the train station!! Theres another girl staying here shes from Estonia and very quiet with a drinking problem which is interesting. The house isn't 5 star but we have a mattress on the floor and some pillows so that will do us! We spent the night settling into our new digs- who would have ever thought we would be here! Sometimes it all seems so strange- but great! At the moment we just feel like 2 homeless people! We did have cockroaches and spiders in the kitchen but we survived!
I had an interview with a Marketing agency, Bobski did his white card course and we went to see some rooms back in St Kilda for us to move into. We decided on one of them on Acland Street- excellent location and cheap as chips. On Friday 9th I had 3 interviews and Phil got a job! How does that work then?? It was a long day running around trying to find the places on trains/trams/buses and having to go pay a deposit on our new room before 4pm! We were absolutely knackered. So pleased that Phil has found something- it takes the pressure off a little bit. Hes working in a factory doing something electrical- and I think hes actually enjoying being back at work- he said he never thought he would say that!! Only down side is that he was up at 5am to get to work from where we were staying in Chadstone- its much better from St Kilda. We moved out of Vladimirs place and said thank you because he had been a really good housemate!! He sorted everything out for us and made sure we were ok which was lovely- he even helped us with our bags to the train station- bless him! The new place isn't the nicest but we cant beat the location. It was a nasty shock to find out we have a big mice problem in our flat- o no!!! Not happy.
I had a disastrous interview at a 'Sales and Marketing' Company- I spent 9 hours selling Australian Power and Gas with a bunch of 18 year olds! It was extremely painful! We were expected to go into peoples houses, alone and at night- No thanks!! I got the job but obviously turned it down! Such a joke. At least I know for the future. So back to the internet searching for me! To work in a bar/restaurant in Oz you need a Responsible Serving of Alcohol certificate so I went on the course to complete it- the exam was open book and the instructor wanted to leave early so we had to work in twos haha!! If I had failed there would have been big issues!
Bobski has made some friends at work and Mr Gareth Evans is living down the road from us so we have had some good drinking sessions- actually 4 in a week I think :-) Its nice to be settled somewhere and have some friends around. It was highly annoying the other day when I went outside and the couple of the balcony above our flat had just won 2.1 million on the lottery- aaaahhhhhh!!! So I went back in to cook our noddles while talking to the mice- what a difference eh?
It's still 27/28 degrees here at the moment even though summer is over here so we have been really lucky. The tans are starting to fade though :-( So the next couple of months entails getting to know Melbourne, being a bit more settled and work work work to save for our next installment. Hope everyone is well at home- remember if you need us my number is +61449563140 and Bobskis is +61451607014. Or if you want to catch us on Skype the best time is your mornings because we are 9 hours ahead xxxxxxx
