Us again…….
Well we arrived at Kenrol farm on 8th October and I have to say we were a little scared at first. We had a cosy little caravan full of spiders which soon got sucked into the vac!! There was a girl called Sam, from Canada working there as well and she was really lovely- turned out to be a complete nutcase in the end lol!! Phil was in his element doing odd jobs and electrical work whilst I mostly helped with cleaning and things to be done on the farm with the animals. So Kenrol is a 1,000 acre property- pretty small compared to their parents place for example, because that's 67,000 acres haha!! We were soon in the swing of things and really enjoying our stay there. The house was constantly busy with people coming and going from all over the place. This is a totally different experience for us and although we weren't there to learn everything we could about farming it was great getting to know the basics- we will never look at cows in the same way. I witnessed pregtesting, taking sperm from bulls, a bull sale, waiting for females to come on heat at 8pm and much much more!!! The farm is mostly about genetics- i.e. they breed bulls to create the 'perfect' one for shows and sales. They are also involved with the meat works and diary etc!! It really was quite interesting. The family invited us into their home and we really appreciated it. The 2 dogs Soot and Gus the basset hound made it even more special! It was sad to leave them. Wendy kindly took us an hour away to the coast so we could jump on a ferry and go to the Southern Barrier Reef and visit Great Keppel Island. It was a beautiful day and we pretty much snorkeled in the amazing water all day. The scary part was 1. Seeing a stingray just below us and 2. thinking I had been stung by a jellyfish. In queensland they have box jelly fish that can kill you with one sting so I was a little scared after feeling an almighty pain in my wrist. Sam and Phil decided I needed wee on it and after realising they conveniently didn't need the toilet I had to do it on myself!!! Yes yes I know- could only happen to me!! When we walked back to the islands centre and someone took a look at it, it turned out to be a sea lice sting- great!!! Ill stick to using the toilet next time! After just 3 weeks we left and decided to go to another property in the Byron Bay area so we were closer to Brisbane for our flight early December. We really didn't want to leave by the end and are definitely planning to go back and enjoy more of what Kenrol has to offer!! I realised meeting people in this environment and seeing a snapshot of their life is what its all about!! Wish we had done something like this sooner.
So now we are at Coorabella, a family estate just outside of Byron Bay. We have only been here a couple of days and so far have mixed feelings. We are sharing a beautiful cabin with Breea and Evan from America which is really good fun. If I could describe the property I would say it would definitely be on the back page of The Journal and something we all go WOW at!!! Its owned by Raechel and Geo who also have a business in Sydney. They host weddings in November so we are here to help make the place even more beautiful- when you first arrive its hard to see what else could possibly done!! It's the perfect place to sit back and relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery! We are staying here until the 29th Nov so ill let you know more by the end of the month!!
