Salut from Romania
We got here on a sleepless overnight train from Croatia via Budapest. We went straight to Brasov in Transylvania, where the first thing we saw was 2 Aussies pay $50 for 75cent bus tickets to get across town. We walked, and ended up in the same hostel as them. We didn't raise the issue with them though.
Of course after being on a train all night, there was no need to sleep, so we climbed a hill instead, where we joined some kids playing truant from school and admired the view.
In Romania we visited Bran Castle, which is a crazy, spired mediaeval castle and was where Vlad Tepes, Dracula, was imprisoned for a time. After his release, he eventually became the ruler of Transylvania, and he impaled 10 000 invading turks, before they gave up. He also impaled many cripples and beggars in an effort to rid his country of poverty.
Also, Rasnov, which is a fortress on a hill, basically a self sufficient town that could withstand sieges for any length of time. Also visited Sinaia, where there are 2 beautiful castles and we ate bear and wild pig.
Then we headed to Sighisoara which is where Vlad ruled from, and was born? We visited the graveyard at night and explored the mediaeval town. After that we headed to Sibiu where we went to an outdoor museum which was a heap of reconstructed traditional houses, mills, wolf traps etc.
Every hostel we went to was populated almost solely by Australians, and they were a good variety as well- budget travellers trying to see as much as possible with a limited supply of cash.
Then we hit another overnight train where we met 2 young Romaniacs who were heading to Austria with us.
