Yes, fianlly getting close to being up to date with this.....Croatia.
Well we arrived at Split on the ferry first thing in the morning, and BJ had already picked out where she wanted to head- another ferry, to the island of Brac. This ferry only ook an hour and then another ferry to get over the mountains to Bol. We were so glad we didn't book any accomodation (we rarely do), because at Split, Supertar and Bol, we had been met by locals offering us cheap accomodation. Cheaper to stay at one of these fully self contained appartments athan the 2 of us to stay in hostel dorm beds. I beat the guy down to 200 kuna per night- about 50 bucks. They are a little keener to bargainwhile its not tourist season.
Unfortunately Belinda was sick with a cold thing, and the weather wasn't that flash- too windy. So we watched a bit of cable tv- watched alot of CNN so we're up to date with the financial crisis and the election in the US. Also, saw a few movies in English which was good. We were just around the corner from the supermarket, and beer was cheap, so took advantage of that. It was about $1 for half a litre- not south america but still good.
On the last day the weather really turned it on and it was beautiful. We hit the beach for hours- the water was a little chilly though, didn't stop us from going in. Unfortunately, the wrong people were getting completely naked in the wrong places. Interesting to note that before swimming naked, you have to stand knee deep in the water and splash it on your chest, under your arms and on your crotch. Then you can dive in.
Beaches in Croatia are nice. That being said they're made of pebbles and there are no waves to speak of. They're nice, they're just not Burleigh, or any other beach down the road.
Next day we caught the 6:30 ferry with everybody heading to work or school on the mainland and then continued on the bus to Zagreb,. They have this ridiculous idea that you have to pay 7 kuna to put the bag on the bus yourself. At the other end you take it off yourself. In reality what yu get is a $1.75 sticker and thats it.
Zagreb was another improvised city tour. Highlight was the bakery where for $7 after having cake for lunch, we gorged ourselves on mouth buning pastries til we were full.
Next day we were on a 7am train from Zagreb to Brasov (Romania), via Budapest (Hungary) which is pretty much the wrong direction.
