We briefly went to Portugal again, because we love the beaches and its sooo much cheaper than Spain. We spent one night in Lisbon, then headed to Sintra for a daytrip. Sintra has a few palaces, one of which we visited the traditional way. It had caves, tunnels and grottos to explore, and was only a hundred years old. Very impressive though.
The second castle we inadvertantly broke into the grounds of. We had decided that we didn't want to pay to get in, but did want to get a good photo of this fairy tale castle. So after walking up an overgrown track to a convent that had a lookout that didn't have a view of the castle, we decided to jump a stone wall and go cross country to a hill that we could see. We passed a telecommunications tower and tried to stay out of site, but soon it became obvious we were amongst other tourists, and made the clever deduction that we were in the castle grounds. Followed the signs to a viewing point, got the awesome photo, and went back for the bag that we had stashed near the stone fence, or rather castle wall.
Next day we headed to Sagres, which is all about the beach. The water is ridiculously cold being the Atlantic, feels like that painful water that you have to grope around in for the last beer in the esky. But the beach had a sprinkling of northern european tourists who must have all forgotten to pack the top part of their swimsuits. We hung out here for a couple of days, and headed to Costa del Sol, Spain.
