Hi, well I finally got a chance to write a blog for our stay in Italy. After narrowly missing horrible weather at Zermatt, Switzerland, we arrived in Milan mid afternoon. A quickly improvised tour of the city took us to all the important sites and ended at a pizza place on the canal. This pizza place was incredible, and for about 25 dollars all together, we had a half litre of wine and 2 of the biggest pizzas we have ever seen. they were literally hanging off the edges of the plates onto the table cloths. I have photos that we'll put on when we get a chance.
Next day, we thought the best remedy for too much pizza was hiking at Lake Como. The weather was pretty sticky, and unfortunately, to catch the last bus back to Milan, when we got to the top of the mountain- to Rifugio Menaggio, we had to pretty much turn around and head back down, but first had a bit of an argument with a Pom who accused us of trying to see Europe in 2 weeks. Hit the canal again for pizza that night.
Next day we heade to Finale Ligure, which was much more our style. we stayed for 3 nights in the hostel- which is a castle- for 15 euros each. The boys dorm is in the castle tower. The only activity hear is going to the beach, and we had some pretty good weather.
Next we headed to Siena, where we stayed only one night. Again, an improvised city tour, after cowering in the rain the first afternoon. Siena was a bit cold we thought, and we couldn't find anywhere that matched the pizzas we'd been getting elsewhere.
Next stop was a town we'd never heard of called Perugia, which was a necessary stop midway before heading to the coast to catch our ferry. But it was nice all the same, and we were able to see the Cathedral and other sites of interest. Most worrying site of all was the biiig eastern european guy getting aroung the hostel in his flannel PJs, don't think he had any other clothes.
Finally after having been delayed several hours on the trains more than once, and Belinda having to turn on the waterworks to the ticket sellers (the bloody machines eat money), we trained our way into Ancona, the port city. At one stage there was a chance we would get a fine for being on an express train with a regional ticket, but I think the conductor just couldn't have been bothered with the paperwork. In Ancona, we bought the cheapest ferry tickets we could get to Croatia, then ducked off to find our last pizza and gelati. Only thing of interest was a big guy said "sorry", and then purposely barged into Belinda while she was carrying her backpack. She was not happy.
On the ferry (10 hours) alot of people had paid extra for airseats that don't recline. After we got kicked off the couches we had snaffled in the movie room, Dave went to the air seat room, where there was noone. He slept stretched out perfectly on the airseats, backpack filling the gap between two sets of twin seats. Belinda fashioned a bed out of 2 cushioned chairs- shes lucky-shes small.
