So, finally since the two and a bit months I've been here, I've managed to make it to the temples. In fact I will be going next week too, eager beaver!
Our first stop was a hike (walk) up Kbal Spean (yes, Cambodia actually has a hill). The walk itself was lovely, animals and funky trees, but the waterfall at the top was a bit of a let-down. It was a tiny little thing with a few engravings and carefully placed stones in front to make splashes sound louder. But with the fab company it didn't matter.
Then we tuk tuked it to Banteay Srei temple which was decorated with sensuous celestial dancers. This was the first temple I had ever visited in Cambodia and I must say, it was stunning. To think they had built this by hand! We even had time to fit in seeing Ta Phrom and Bayon. Ta Prom is one of the most photographed temples, deliberately left mostly unrestored, and tangled and strangled by undergrowth, branches and roots and the Bayon temple at Angkor Thom consists of towers in the shape of bodhisattva faces. There were sooo many faces it was like you were always being watched!
To end the day I thought it would be nice to try eel (as you do). Actually apart from the bone (or spine) which I spat out in shock (I thought they were boneless, oh how stupid I was) it was surprisingly nice....oh, and some duck at a restaurant called 'Green Star'.
