We got a little more adventurous and took a turnoff of hwy 87 into Deschutes national Forest to check out the Newberry Volanic National Monument area. Sounds cool right? 18 miles off the hwy, and all uphill. Ends up between 2 lakes: east lake and Pauline lake. In between is a crater and a big lava flow. Called ahead & found out his was their last day. Said we could stay in campground tho. Up we went. Gorgeous drive, amazing blue lake. They get big snow in this area and usually by now everything is shut down up here getting ready for snow season. But this year weather so good so open late. The guy at East lake Resort rented Greg a little aluminum boat and off he went with livvy for some fly fishing. I stayed at trailer with sleepy baby and obnoxious dog who desperately wanted to be swimming in a lake he could see 40 feet away! I didnt think fishermen near shore would appreciate that so kept him out. Ugh. 2+ hours later Greg & Livvy back. They had caught a good trout... Brown trout. Unfortunately netting it, livvy got the hook right into her finger. Ouch. Barbed hook too. Greg managed to yank it out. A few tears but She wanted to stay out there.
We got settled in campsite. Campfire. Kids wanted to roast a hotdog. Figured it may be our last campfire so hotdog for dinner it is. And noodles too. Yum.
Adults had flatiron steak we had bought from local grass fed cattle farm at a market in Klamath falls.
Gorgeous night. Huge blanket of stars. Kids went to sleep quickly after lots of fresh air.
Night was COLD. wow. Goes from 25 or so during day to -4 at night. Luckily we had unhooked water line before bed. Frozen solid in the morning. Shower will have to wait.
Up & going and wanted to stop at the lava flow that's part of this area. Called Big Obsidian Flow. Had no idea what that meant.
Lava flow creates glass... Different grades range from pumice (lots of air bubbles, super light) to obsidian (cooled very fast, no bubbles at all, dense). Was miles and piles of this black rock, and lots of it the obsidian glass. Jet black, glossy rock "glass". Amazing!!! Took a big piece home (pretty sure we broke some rule there). Crazy cool.
Down into Bend oregon for a stop at Costco, lunch, and on our way north. Maybe Portland tonight?
