We went on the Horse Trail ride that we'd booked up today. It was the first time I had ever been on a horse and I absolutely loved it! We had to go into the pen and line up against the fence spread out and the guides brought our horses over to us. I felt a bit nervous at first because there was no longer a fence separating us and my horse's face was so close to mine. My horse was dark brown and he was called Dingo! (I can hear you now Dan) :)
There were around 10 horses there but they have 300 altogether and some mules. They don't breed- they are all male and all are bought at auctions, so they've actually saved a lot from being killed.
They were all so beautiful. Kelly's horse was a whitish/grey and he was called Navahoe. When we got on we were told how to use our heels and the reigns to get the horse to go, stop, turn left or right etc, and then we were off! We were out for just under an hour and it was such a fun trail because it was through the forest and we actually had some really steep hills to go up and down-there was hardly any flat terrain along the whole trail which made it so much more interesting and enjoyable. We even went through the Spray River at two different points which was fun.
The horses have to travel one behind the other because they don't like riding next to each other apparently. A couple of times my horse broke into a little run if he got behind Navahoe which was a little scary but fun at the same time.
I'm a little disappointed because I really wanted a photo of me on the horse but there wasn't really any photo taking opportunities.
It was just so nice to be out on a horse on a sunny day in Canada riding through forest and river with the mountains in the background!! Definitely one of the highlights of my trip so far.
Also while we were riding through the forest we saw a huge male elk with massive antlers sitting down so we had to be really careful going past him as they can be dangerous. Our guide told us that they have more trouble in Canada with elk and tourists than they do with bears!
We headed back to the hostel after for a nice chilled out afternoon.
