Well today was my last day working in the hospital. Cant believe its over already! Had a really good day. This morning I said goodbye and thank-you to Mrs A, who has been my supervisor at the hospital. I got her a little card and a box of chocolate which she seemed really chuffed with! Next I hit the ETU, armed with a big chocolate cake and a card. It seemed to go down quite well! I thought the cake was a bit minging though, way too sweet! The morning I spent with a new set of student nurses, observing patients. There wasnt really much going on though. A man came in who was suffering from chest pains after a coconut dropped out of a tree onto his head! Such a tropical complaint! After lunch I went back to the hospital and some of the staff were doing presentations in the etu, that lasted about an hour and a half and was really interesting. Not sure what they did about patients in this time... Two of them got wheeled out (I presume they were stable at this point, but cant be sure...) and nobody new came in. I asked the student nurses what happened if there was a patient and they just shrugged! Surely they cant shut up shop in an emergency department? Who knows though, this is Sri Lanka! After the lectures there was food and drinks for all the staff which was nice and this gave me a chance to take some photos and say my good byes (which I am terrible at, not in an emotional sense, just not knowing what to say!). The new student nurses gave me their addresses and asked me to write to them and took mine too. It was so nice! I felt sad leaving in a way but pleased in another. I was sad as I felt like I was settled in and was getting to know everyone but I was pleased as I was getting a bit bored due to the fact there wasnt really much I could do there and I couldnt understand most of what was going on due to language and lack of knowledge. I am going back to the hospital after dinner to see one of the nurses that I made friends with who is on night duty. I hope shes not expecting me to work with her as I have just packaged up my uniform to send home!
Oh yeh last night, there was some ceremony at the cricket ground in Galle, where there were 700 monks not totally sure what it was in aid of but something to do with the younger monks getting their robes. I tried to take a few photos as it was such an amazing sight seeing this sea of orange robes taking over the cricket stand, but there were lots of police around and after my incident with trying to take photos of soldiers playing cricket (I nearly got into A LOT of trouble!) I decided to not risk another incident. Im pretty gutted though cos both of these would have made amazing photos.
So here I am with 4 days left in this beautiful country. My plan is to go to the post office tomorrow (which could take half a day!) to send my package home and then Im off to Una for the day to top up my tan. Then Im going to treat myself to dinner in Galle Fort and watch the sun set again. Friday Im going back to Una to meet up with the other volunteers and staying there till Sunday when I have to pack up to leave at midnight Sunday night, ready for the next part of my journey
