Well it isnt long since i last wrote but i have had such an eventful morning!!! plus im off for another 2 and half hours so need to kill some time! My day didnt start off great as i got to the hospital for 8 o'clock as the doctor had told me to the day before, but i was sat doing nothing till 9! then at 9 the doctors came and started seeing patients so it started getting a bit more interesting. Saw a few operations such as ingrown toe nail getting taken off, cuts being stiched etc then the big one came. This guy was wheeled in on a stretcher and was covered in blood as he had cut right down his hand in between thumb and finger. This was all very exciting and another surgeon came to help as it was such a big operation. Funnily enough, im not completely sure wether they anaesatized him completely as the operation seemed to be causing him a lot of pain!!! the operation took quite some time as they had to check wether he had damaged any nerves or tendons and then had to stich the muscle back together. Whilst all this was going on, one of the surgeons got talking to me. he was asking me all the usual questions but starting being a bit hostile asking me why i had come here, how much i paid and wether i thought it was beneficial to pay that much. it was quite intimidating really and i really started to feel like they didnt want me there. So i went home (to use the toilet cos the house is just down the road and the toilets in the hospital are minging!!) and when i was at home i really starting considering not going back to the hospital. I was fed up of being made to feel like i was intruding and thought if they dont want me there i dont want to be there. but i thought thats not the right things to do and went back. and i am really glad that i did because i got tlaking to both surgeons again and managed to explain why i was there and the fact that in england you arent allowed to into a hospital and observe if you are not training. they starting asking me some questions about my experience etc and then one of them invited me to observe in main theatre later on! i was so chuffed that he asked me this because for one its something that i really want to see and also because it made me feel like were happy to have me there and teach me stuff. after this the doctor really involved me in the proceedures and explained what he was doing in each case. this was great. he was even testing me on things and i managed to answer a few questions which made me look less ignorant!!! it was 10 to 12 (12 is my lunch break) and a patient came in who had cut the top of his thumb off. i finally plucked up the courage to ask if i could help and the doctor said yes!! but then no because all he was doing was putting a bandage on and sending him for full surgery as the operation was so bad that he needed a skin graft. so i watched him bandage this guy up, and you should have seen his thumb, it was proper mangled and he must have cut some main artery cos there was blood squirting out at pressure from his thumb it was so cool! anyway the next patient came in and it was a cut on his thumb that needed stiching. so i put the gloves on (correctley this time!) and help him! it was so great but i was also dead nervous about making me debut!!!! all i had to do was swab the blood and cut the stiches but it was soooo great to be involved in it! so the doctor told me to go to the main theatre at 4 today where they do operations till midnight (not that i will be there that long!) and i can abserve and he will teach me!!!! brilliant!! it will be proper full operations where the patients are asleep. i cant wait. i have even got jill to teach me how to scrub up!!!
so now i am just killing time by searching on the internet for hotels on the beach as me and jill are going to have a beach weekend. she leaves in a week and i have just got here so we both want mega tans!!! anyway will write more about my surgert later!!!!
