well, i didnt get my chance to go to the theatre on thursday. i went to theatre at 4 oclock and was just getting changed into my scrubs when the head nurse of theatre told me i wasnt supposed to be there and to go to the matrons office! uh-oh! so i went and one of the matrons asked me where i had been and why i hadnt been in in the afternoon. i explained that the doctor told me to go to theatre at 4 and she said i should have checked it with them first. i felt like crying, i felt like i was in the head teachers office at school getting a b******ing! it was very scary! then mrs.a came in - who is the head matron - and i explained what had happened and she was really nice about it, and even said 'miss alice, you do not worry, we are friend!!!' which made me feel better. she told me the next day i would be in endoscopy so i went home and found out more about that from jill.
anyway, i the morning i got to mrs a's office and she said she had arranged for me to go to theatre which was really nice of her!!! so i went and put all the scrubs on and the cap, shoes and surgical mask! it was cool! i went in and i first observed 2 bum-hole operations... not sure what they were really because i couldnt get close enough to the surgeons to ask! then i was watching what they do with patients after surgery and 2 nice doctors introduced themselves to me and told me to ask them any questions and explained the next operation. it was a laparotony, where they cut through the stomach. so there they were, pulling this ladies intestines out of her stomach and eventually found a huge tumour that they removed. it was really interesting to see all the insides, i found it fascinating. i know a few of you have been reading this thinking im mad but its great for me to do this and realise that this is the kind of thing i want to be doing. next up was another laparotony, the doctor explained to me that this was as the patient had been complaing of pain in the abdomen and rather than doing a scan which was too costley they were going to open them up. it was quite similar to the opertation before but this time i got to see the stomach! cool! unfortunately i didnt get the see the end of it cos i had to leave cos we have to leave around 12 as mrs manamperi prepares lunch for us. i went to the matrons office to sign out and got talking to her and she invited me to her house! how nice! wether anything will come of it or not who knows, as she is a little bit forgetful! she told me that next week i would be in neo natal but im not banking on it as she may have changed her mind before then. so we will see what tomorrow brings!
so i went home and had lunch and then jill and i headed off to mirissa beach for the weekend. we took a bus there and checked in to our hotel, right on the beach for about 20 pounds a night including breakfast and dinner!!! bargain!! so we had a walk a long the beach taking some photos which at the moment i cant put up cos this internet is so useless!!! it is a really beautiful beach. unawatuna is beautiful but mirissa just had something about it that makes it more special, maybe its that its not that busy and touristy, just really serene and chilled out. we then had cocktails on the beach and watched the sun set which was great! the cocktails were very strong though!after this we had a really nice dinner at the hotel and just went to bed as we were knackered! the next day we spent the whole day on the beach and both managed to get sunburnt! i have very sunburnt knees and face, with some cracking blisters on my chin!!! nice! it was a really gorgeous day. then we had dinner and a few drinks at the restuarant before getting chucked out at 10 because it was closing! i guess that is the pace round here. today we got up to a cloudy day which was a bit of a shame. i have sunburnt my back also so couldnt face lying on the sun loungers so just chilled out in the room for a bit. jill tried the beach but it just wasnt happening, it has been cloudy all day. so at 12 we packed up and headed off. after a realllllllly scary bus ride where we were standing up and not sure wether he was going to stop the bus to let us off or just slow down a bit, we went to a turtle sanctury. here they collect the eggs that are layed from the beach and hatch them and release them after they are 4 days old. this is because people take the eggs and eat them and birds eat them so it is for thier protection. we saw loads of little babies and got to hold some!!! i have some great pictures, ill try and get them up. there were also biggers ones, and really rare and beautiful ones. it was really good. then we got a bus back to galle. it was only half 1 and we couldnt face going back to the house so early with nothing to do so we decided to splash out and have lunch in one of the posh hotels in the fort. it was absoloutley gorgeous! i think its 225 pounds a night to stay there, so you can imagine how posh it is! i had fancy fish and chips then mango sorbet. it was really delicious and quite pricey but as its jills last weekend here we thought why not!!! then we went home and both had a sleep and i am feeling like i am getting a cold which is rubbish!!!!!!! hopefully it will be just a sniffle but i can feel my head going :(
Tonight i think i will do some chilling and reading of my hong kong guide book! then have an early night ready for a new week at the hospital - how exciting!
