Another weekend is down! Can you believe it, I am now 6 days away from leaving. But I've only just got here!
Well I had an amazingly relaxed weekend. Got to the hotel on Thursday and it was sooo nice… I had a deluxe room which was built into this big rock face and it was just amazing. Apart from the ants! And the fact the roof leaked! But you kind of expected it cos it was quite an 'outdoor' themed room. The bathroom was really nice and the shower was outdoors! It was amazing! Apart from the ants!
It was raining when I arrived; I was quite gutted as I was looking forward to relaxing in the sun! But what can you do, at least I didn't have snow like you guys! So relaxed in my room for a bit then booked myself in for an Ayuveric massage. This was really nice, apart from the oil that he used had a bit of a funny smell to it but he said it was a herbal one. They do this really weird thing to you were they kind of snap the end of your fingers.. its really weird as I wasn't sure wether the noise was my bones cracking or him snapping his fingers. But the whole thing was very therapeutic and relaxing and he told me it was great for losing weight (I'm starting to get a bit of a complex here!!!) Then he gave me a discounted foot massage that was really nice. After this I went back to my room and watched a dvd with the air con on (oh what a luxury this was!) after this I went to get a shower to wash all the oil off and I noticed that there was a nest of ants coming out of the shower head which was really really horrible. So I went down to reception to complain, and was made to feel like I was being fussy! I was like surely you wouldn't want to shower in ants as well as water!!! So they sent a guy up to spray the little b*****s and after that there were no more ants thank god! And I had a lovely relaxing shower under the trees! That night I had a lonely meal at the hotel as I was half board. It was a great meal and the waiters tried their best to keep me company bless them but I get fed up of constantly answering the same questions!
The next day the sun came out - hoorah! So I went down to the beach but it was too hot and sandy so I went back to the hotel to chill by the pool. Here there was this really weird bloke who was staying at the hotel. I don't know whether he was drunk or on drugs but something wasn't quite right. The night before I had seen some of the hotel staff having to hold him up taking him to his room! Anyway we got chatting and he said he was from London and worked in classical music with people like Charlotte Church and G4. He was soooooo camp and kept talking about how much he missed his boyfriend who was in LA. I don't know if he was telling the truth about all this it all seemed a bit elaborate. And he kept asking me the same questions over and over again like what my job was and what my boyfriend did. He was a bit odd. The next day I saw him again and he didn't have a clue who I was! Probs for the best! So I spent the rest of the day by the pool and just generally relaxing. I had my lunch at the hotel instead of my dinner as I decided I wanted to venture out. I went to a bar right on the beach for a drink and then to an Italian restaurant and had pesto pasta which was a nice change from rice and curry.
The next day I was trying to get my phone to work as 2 of the other volunteers said they were coming to Una so I needed to have my phone on. But the damn thing wouldn't switch on or charge or anything. So I had to come back to galle to this intenet café where they sell phones too and they sold me a really cheap one! Thank goodness I felt lost with out it! Anyway turns out they weren't coming to Una anymore anyway which I was a bit gutted about as I was starting to get lonely by myself. They were staying at Hikkaduwa which is a town half an hour north of galle so I decided to stay at my hotel that night then go and see them there the next day. So I did some sunbathing and booked a rice milk therapy at the ayuveric spa. This consisted of the guy patting me with hot little bundles of rice cooked in milk. Sounds strange but was very relaxing! Apart from when he went on my shoulders because these were sun burnt! That night I went for a drink at the bar on the sea front and watched the sun go down, then went for dinner at the hotel.
On Sunday I went back to the house and dumped my bag and set off for Hikkaduwa. Had a really nice day did some sunbathing, relaxing, shopping and then we all sat around having a drink in front of the sea, it was really nice! Then I went back to my house for dinner and no1 else turned up which was a bit sad! I spent the whole meal watching this spider in the corner of the room that was about as big as an apple, convinced it was going to come and eat me! So many bugs!
Today I woke up after a really bad nights sleep and wasn't looking forward to spending the day in the hospital. But of course once I got there I had a really good time and they let me help with a patient from a road traffic accident which was cool. He had this massive chunk of skin missing off his knee, about the size of a5 sheet of paper! Gross! This afternoon there were hardly any patients so most of it was spent sat around chatting. The nurses helped fill up my notebook some more! I don't know how we got onto talking about it but they asked me what religion I was. When I said I wasn't religious you should have seen their reactions! They were like 'But, but you must believe in something' they just couldn't get their heads round the fact me and family weren't religious. It makes you realize what a big deal it is here.
After work I went to the supermarket and when I was looking round I noticed that they sell talc to make you skin looker whiter and they have special creams to lighten your skin too. Crazy eh here I am trying to get a tan and they want to be lighter! Anyway I think this blog is long enough, I'm off for some scran.
