ok please note that none of my blog photos relate to the entry!
me and jill have just stumbled across the best internet cafe in the world!!!! we have been so frustrated with the other ones as they are soooo slow but we have just found the quickest one with new computers and guys who know what they are doing if you need help!!! and for 50 rupees and hours which is 25p! and they have just brought us a complimentary coffee! and air con!!! ok so maybe i am a bit over excited by all this but seriously it is a big deal to us and it means i can finally put pictures up! hoorah!!!
i am on a real high today!!!! last night after dinner i was feeling really rubbish because i was coming down with a cold aand i was soooooo hot i just wanted to be at home in the cold!!! then i had a really bad night of not being able to sleep then waking up whenever i fell asleep! i woke up this morning feeling very glum and when we were all sat down to breakfast everyone seemed to have that monday morning feeling and we barely spoke. then after a horrible cold shower me and jill set off to the hospital. my low mood was also making me feel really anxious and worried about what would happen in the hospital. but when we got to mrs.a's office she told me i was going to be in etu (emergency treatment unit) with Jill. this cheered me up a bit. and once i got in there i loved it. everyone was soooo friendly and having jill there to explain things to me was really helpful as she pretty much knows everything that is going on and i am clueless! the first patient was a gir who had been in a motorbike accident and she was in quite a bad way. we took her for a ct scan and xray which was really interesting to see. next there was a man with a heart attack and a lady who was in shock and i dont think her heart was working properly. so the morning was spent watching how they monitored and treated these patients which was very useful because the way the nurses were monitoring them is the same way they do in the uk. so i am learing how to monitor heart rate, blood pressure and ECGs, it is really interesting! i really feel like i am going to be a step ahead when i start uni! go me!
after lunch we went to back to find that there were no patients there. they had all be sent to the wards. in the afternoon there arent as many patients and we spent the first hour reading, chatting etc. Then in comes a patient and its a guy who has eaten 15 pellets on rat poisen and drank half a bottle of arrack! (fermented coconut spirit!) so they gave him about 2 litres of saline to make him sick but he was just drinking it like water and not vomiting! crazy! eventually he was a bit sick. meanwhile another patient came in who was suffering from chest pain and i got to help put the leads on! very exciting for me as you can imagine! the nurses are so nice in this department that they are happy for you to help so its great for me! next was a tea break and i got one of the nurses to teach me how to make tea sri lankan style which is very different from our english tea bag effort!
so i am in etu for the rest of the week which i am really pleased about. maybe i will ask to stay for longer. tomorrow is just a half day as we have the afternoon off to go to the volunteers event which is an afternoon at a hotel with yoga and cookery lessons (separately, not some sort of new fangled hobbie!) and a rice and curry buffet. i am really looking forward to it as i will get to meet all the other volunteers.
