For the past two days we have been making our way home. On Thursday we drove 483 miles from Double Nickel Campground in Waco, NB to Hickory Hollow Campground in Utica, IL
The campground is well maintained and right off the highway. You do get road noise, I guess we are getting into more populated areas. I am not sure I will stay here again though. When I called to find out if they had a spot, they said yes, but they would not have a spot with satellite. We do not care about that since we do not have one with us. They also asked what time I would arrive. I said 7:30 and their answer was you have to make it in by 8 because we close...OK. We have stayed at many campgrounds where we have pre-paid for the spot and they leave us the site information or they simply leave me the information and ask me to go by the office in the morning to pay. Either way they were welcoming of our business.
I walked Shila around the campground in the morning and there were plenty of open sites with no trees in the way. If we would had needed satellite reception that should not have been the problem they made it out to be. I guess they need some business sense in IL.
Since checkout was at noon and we have 600 miles to get home which we are not going to drive in one day, we took our time leaving this morning. We ended up heading out about 11AM.
I need to make a note to self to avoid Route 80 between Joliett, IL and South Bend, IN. Bad roads combined with heavy traffic and crazy drivers is a recipe for stressful RV driving. On top of that Indiana has a construction project on Route 80 which starts almost at the border and goes all the way to Elkhart. We got out at Exit 15A in Indiana to head to lunch right as the traffic was coming to a complete stop. While at lunch I looked at the map and decided to take the scenic route. We drove on Route 6 East all the way east of Elkhart to bypass the madness. We drove right passed the Newmar Factory, too bad it was 4PM - their last tour was at 1. I would have loved to go in for their factory tour. I love those RVs even though I would probably never own one. They are way bigger than anything I want to drive around in.
After 281 miles which took us over 7 hrs. we are at the Tiffin Service Plaza parked for the night in Ohio. We stopped here to check if we would drive on or stay. The next area is 59 miles away so we decided to stay. It is a nice parking area and there was a grass area with picnic table for Shila to run around. She had a stressful ride today. She got spooked with all the jumping and shaking in the bad section of the road and tried to climb on my lap as I was driving. Gil had to stop what he was doing and cuddle with her for a while.
We have 352 miles to get home, we will get up very early tomorrow and finish up the trip.
