We spent the night at Walmart near Route 26 and not far from our destination. Scott's Bluff National Monument. After getting ready we arrived at the monument about 10AM.
We checked in at the Visitor Center and were told since our RV was not allowed on the road to the top we were welcome to hike up or ride the shuttle. We opted to ride the shuttle. Since it was going to get really hot out we decided to do that first.
We rode the shuttle bus up with two other families. The driver offered to wait if we were going to be a short while or come back in whatever time they decided. One couple said they would only be 15 min. I am not sure what the other family ended up doing since we did not see them the rest of the time. Gil and I decided to hike the short trail to one overlook and the hike down the 2.6 mile trail to the bottom of the bluff.
The bluffs are all sand, it was a pretty cool view of the landscape around us from the top and the hike down gave us different views of them. It was a hot hike down. Back at the Visitor Center we browsed through the Museum. The location is also part of the Oregon Trail and Mormon Trail. It has the history of how the bluffs were named. We also waited to watch the 15 min film in the VC Theater and walked outside looking at the wagons on the Oregon Trail. We have been to other Oregon Trail locations where you can actually still see the ruts in the ground.
After sightseeing we drove to Chili's for lunch which was across from where we spent the night. About 2 o'clock we started our trek home. We were about 1477 miles away. We are going to take it easy and drive less than 400 miles each day since we do not have to get home until Saturday.
We drove 359 miles and spent the night at Double Nickle Campground in Waco, NB. It is a private campground with new owners. They closed at 9PM, but were nice enough to wait for us to check in. We arrived about 9:10PM (really 8 for us, but we lost an hour with the time change). The campground is literally next to the highway, but surprisingly it was quiet at night. The campground has nice amenities and it looks like the new owners are working on improvements. I would stay there again if ever going through the area.
