Today was a relaxed day. Some slept in while others sat outside enjoying a cup of their favorite hot beverage and reading a book. It was not warm enough for the pool.
After breakfast we played some games and got ready for the highlight of our trip. We are going up Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the North East. It was supposed to be a mostly sunny day when I checked the weather a week ago before booking the trip, however it was mostly cloudy. I am not so sure we will have much of a view today. The Mountain is known for making its own weather and conditions turning on a dime.
We took a taxi to the railway station where we had reservations to ride up the Cog Railway to the peak. The ride up takes about 45 minutes and the view from the train going up the mountain is spectacular. When we reached the top the mountain was enveloped in clouds. It was very cold and windy at the summit. I knew we had to go prepared, so we wore long pants and had warm jackets with us. A lot of people were freezing in shorts, t-shirts and even summer dresses.
We got to spend an hour at the summit, took a picture at the summit mark, visited the Weather Discovery Center, mailed some postcards from the peak and prayed for some visibility. The clouds were so thick we could not even see the parking lot where the cars can park when they drive up the Auto road. There is an observatory platform, but not worth going up since there was zero visibility. Right before we headed back down, we were rewarded a couple of times with about 30 seconds of clearing, giving us a peak of what the views would be.
Oh well, what can you do? Maybe another time we are in the area we will drive up on a good day.
We went back to the campground on the taxi and after dinner we relaxed by the campfire. Tomorrow we head out to the last State on this trip we have never been to before - Maine.
