Zoe and Ed's Travels
Greetings from Kolkata (also known as Calcutta). We arrived here yesterday on a flight from Delhi - the most civilized way to travel across India, what? We've been taking it easy today - had a lovely lunch on a 10th floor rooftop terrace restaurant (from where we could watch the smog lifting), watched some cricket on the Maidan (big green area in the centre of the city) and then went for a coffee and cake. Also browsed a couple of bookshops. It's much warmer here than Delhi, which is a relief, as Delhi was having its coldest weather for 70 years when we were there. Kolkata seems to be a very nice city, apart from the traffic and pollution; there are many upmarket shops and cafes, and it's unusual to have a large green space and broad avenues in places we've been so far, with the exception of New Delhi. In many senses it feels much more like the sort of city we're used to finding in other countries. We haven't got too many plans for sight-seeing here: Kolkata is a fairly new city and so doesn't have the historical monuments of other places we've been to. But it is a nice place to hang around.
