Zoe and Ed's Travels
Merry Christmas, everyone!
We are spending Christmas in Jaisalmer, in the west of Rajasthan. We got here two days ago. We met a Belgian couple on the bus here, and have been spending time with them pottering around the town. In fact we are staying in the fort, which is just like a little town, with lots of shops and narrow streets (unlike the other forts in Rajasthan which are cultural monuments and museums). It's apparently the only fort like this in the world. This evening we are going to go to one of the posh hotels for a swim in the pool followed by a Christmas buffet, complete with live music. We are planning to go on a camel trip after Christmas (but not the three day variety - don't worry, Kate).
We arrived in Jaisalmer from Jodhpur, where we spent only one day; we spent most of the day going around the fort, which was really enjoyable. It has a beautiful palace inside. There was a very informative audio tour which was included in the entrance price. We stayed in a guesthouse just near the fort, which had a rooftop restaurant with magnificent views of the city. Jodhpur is known as the Blue City, as many of the houses are painted light blue. Jaisalmer is known as the Golden City, because it is all built out of sandstone. Our guesthouse here is on the edge of the fort, and there is a rooftop restaurant with views out over the edge of the ramparts to the city below and the desert beyond.
It's not really very Christmassy here, but we're trying our best: playing our two Christmas songs, and exchanging small presents. We've also dressed up as smartly as we could manage.
We will spend a few days here after Christmas and then move on to other places in Rajasthan.
