Zoe and Ed's Travels
Greetings from Delhi.
We ended up coming here from Agra, rather than our planned trip to Khajuraho and Varanasi, because we're running out of time and also didn't fancy the hours on buses and trains to get across the north of India. Instead we're flying to Calcutta tomorrow.
It's quite a relief to get somewhere which feels like a proper city. It has pavements, and coffee, and everything. They even have a metro system, which isn't in the Lonely Planet (because it's so new)! Having said that there are still the usual problems getting rickshaws with meters that "work", and that don't take you to their brother's shop.
We have seen the Red Fort (which was probably the least impressive of the forts which we've seen) and also New Delhi with the India Gate and the various grand government buildings. We also went to see the National Museum, where they have artefacts from Indian civilisations dating back to 3000BC.
We bumped into our friends Anja and Sven in the street! They were even more surprised than us as we'd told them that we were not going to Delhi. They've now flown off to Thailand, so we're less likely to bump into them again! But you never know.
It is really cold here! It warms up in the middle of the day, but the mornings and evenings are freezing (almost literally according to the local paper). There are no proper windows and no heating in the guesthouses we have been staying in, so Zoe has taken to wearing a hat at night. Our sleeping bags are coming in very handy.
Tried to get a visa for Bangladesh today, but our trip to the Bangladeshi embassy was less than successful. We're going to try again at the consulate in Calcutta later this week. Apparently the embassy is on holiday for three days (good timing) so we might have to wait till Friday. This might mean we have less time in Bangladesh than we'd planned, but then again we haven't really planned it at all. We might get to see something extra before we leave India!
