From Rainbow Beach, we caught the bus back to Brisbane and then flew to Melbourne for the 3rd time on this trip! From Melbourne we went to Torquay which would be our base for our week at the Rip Curl Pro, Bells Beach. For anyone not interested in surfing you probably won't want to read this journal entry, for anyone interested that doesn't know what I am talking about, the Rip Curl Pro is one of the events on the professional surfing tour so it was a pretty exciting time for us!! Especially because we were lucky enough to be given VIP passes by Lyndon, thanks Lyndon! So on our first morning we arrived and were given a tour by the Rip Curl marketing manager, it was great, we got to go in to see the judges and the media and all the places you're not allowed to go basically! We were then shown the room where the surfers hang out in between surfing, and that is where it happened...yes, I saw Kelly Slater, in the flesh, OH MY GOODNESS!! For anyone who doesn't know who Kelly Slater is, you are missing out, look him up!!!! Needless to say I nearly passed out at the very sight of him, but managed to walk away calmly without making a fool of myself! The rest of the day was spent watching the remaining heats in round 1 of the mens competition, which sadly was our last chance to watch the men surf because the swell wasn't good enough the rest of the time we were there and they postponed it to the following week, never mind. We did however get to see the whole womens competition, and the women seriously rock! It was so good, we watched it all from the beach and saw all the surfers as they came down to the water and then back out again, we got a few autographs and I had my picture taken with Layne Beachley which was cool, she is a surfing legend. Watching the final was pretty exciting too and then we got to see the presentation of the bell to Steph Gilmore who won the womens competition. So all in all, a very exciting week, I have decided my life will now consist of travelling the world following the ASP tour and just sitting on a beach watching surfing, its definately the way to go!!!
