Ohayou!
Today we boarded a plane and left Okinawa early in the morning. After travelling for a good few hours, we ended up in Hiroshima, where we've spent the day taking in the sites. We started with the A-bomb Dome, which has been preserved exactly as it was when the atomic bomb detonated in August 1945. The bomb exploded about 600m above the dome, but since it was directly above it, many of the walls were left standing, although they've been burned and knocked down and only the skeleton of the dome remains.
There are lots of smaller peace memorials dotted around the dome and on the way into the Peace Memorial Park, where there is the flame that is not going to be extinguished until all of the nuclear weapons in the world are destroyed, the centograph commemorating all of those that died, and the Peace Memorial Museum.
We then walked down Peace Boulevard, which took us to Hijiyami Park, which was essentially a forest. There were some great views to be had here all over the city. Also here were the Hiroshima Contemporary Art Museum (which was changing between exhibitions today, so we didnt go in - though we did wander through the sculpture garden, where there were some crazy, but great, sculptures) and the Hiroshima Manga Library (which I thought was a museum, but it was literally a library of manga). We then made our way back to the streetcar stop, and rode that back to the hostel, which seems like a nice place.
Hiroshima itself looks really nice and seems really lively; but tomorrow we're aiming to go to Miyajima, the "Shrine Island" nearby.
