Day 5 - I don't care, just phuket!!
This was supposed to be just a travelling day, not much happening between koh samui and phi phi so I wasn't really going to write anything, but since this journey is the first thing not to go perfectly for us I thought I'd better recant the entire thing!
Yet another early start... 6am alarm set so we could get our taxi to the ferry back to the mainland! So off to phuket we go!! We get to the ferry port and wait around for a while before the ferry arrives, the ferry was an old catamaran type thing. Like most vehicles we've seen in Thailand so far it was a lot older than it looked, they're quite keen on giving things a new coat of paint on the outside to distract you from how s*** the inside is, just like the bus I'm currently sitting on writing this part...but I'll come to that later. The ferry was quick, just a 45 minute crossing and busses were waiting at the pier to take everyone to their respective destinations! The bus we got on was fairly clean but worn, Becky and I both tried to catch up on some sleep, only she succeeded! After about an hour of travelling we stopped on a town which I can't name and were told to leave the bus, at this point we didn't realise what was going on as our bags were being removed from the 'boot' or whatever the equivalent is on a bus. We were then told to move our things to another bus and wait about half an hour before it to leave! Remember I mentioned the bus I'm sitting on writing this? Well, again it was a vehicle that was mutton dressed as lamb, quite nice and normal looking on the outside but grotty as hell and smelling a little bit of urine on the inside! Then the farce really begins, Becky and I had been discussing how surprised we were that things were pretty well organised here! We spoke too soon! We got on the bus in good time before it left, which some people with tickets chose not to, then it seemed the entire local area decided to get on the bus and clogged up the aisle, the staff on the outside thinking that these people were supposed to be on the bus actually brought stools onto the bus for people to sit on in the aisle, only in Thailand... Then the staff realise their mistake, they sent too many people onto the bus...didn't look like it needed much realising to figure out what was wrong to me, because there was about 15 extra people on the bus than should have been! Then a quite irate member of staff started walking down the bus asking for our ticket stubs. I'd momentarily lost mine but luckily I found it or she'd have thrown me off or made me pay again!
Finally when all this was sorted we were swiftly on our way over to patong on phuket...or so we thought! It was not swift by any stretch of the imagination. After being told we'd arrive at 2pm, it took another 3 hours for us to actually get there! Longest 3 hours of my life!! But once again it wasn't all doom and gloom, get ready this one is quite a corker! On the second bus there was this couple that i'd noticed looked quite loved up on the ferry and on the first bus, but it emerged on the second bus that they were from a weird arranged marriage cult and had only met a few days before and were getting married some time in the future, I first noticed something amiss when I overheard them talking behind us as if they'd never met which I thought was strange as I'd seen them kissing and cuddling! But Becky then overheard the rest confirming that they were literally just meeting really! She only just found out he was a vegetarian! Good luck with that love...
So anyway I digress, we finally made it to patong which is known as the Blackpool of phuket, but unfortunately we can't really experience this as we're up early again to get the ferry to phi phi! Off to see the beach beach! So it's beers in the hotel and an early night!
Updates on this tomorrow!
Thanks for reading!
