Day 2 - Bangkok has them now!
Day two begins with a delicious breakfast, Waffles and bacon!! (I'm a closet American). After this we head out to see what Bangkok has to offer, so we started with the grand palace... The taxi ride there was typical, again no real road rules and general chaos! We arrive at the grand palace and are immediately accosted by a scammer outside one of the gates, so he's ignored and after a little jaunt into the surrounding streets checking out the street vendors with people selling "bags of fanta" we head to the main gate, where we discover that 'proper attire' is required so we are again accosted by a scammer asking is to go with them to get our long trousers and long sleeve tops, but the queue is massive, so since we only had the day in the city we decide to head out to explore the other sights! We walk around a corner looking for a tuk tuk to take us to the Buddhist temple 'Wat Arun Rajwararam' or 'The Temple of Dawn' and promptly find one, but surprise surprise he's a scammer informing us that the temple is closed and he'll take us to lots of other sights! Being well aware of this scam already we humoured him for a while and asked him to take us to kaosan road, to which he refuses and we walk away, finding another tuk tuk a while later who takes us to the temple! This place is spectacular, there are a few towers around the temple with a large spire in the middle which are all decorated with little bits of porcelain all over, it must have taken them ages to build because the place is huge. Some hilarity was had here, upon reading the back of the ticket, there were a few rules that we had to uphold, first there was the obvious like proper attire, don't climb on the rails and no littering, but then comes the one we can't work out, 'do not dangle any dolls' not sure if that's literal or it means something else...
After this we decide to head back to the hotel because of the extreme heat, humidity and jet lag really setting in we have a spot of lunch and a nap before heading out to see what kaosan road has to offer! If you've never heard of it, it's like all the strips of the major European party resorts, eg magaluf and malia and the like, mixed with a lot of Asian spice! It's the most surreal place I've ever been to, but a lot of fun! Lots of bars, clubs and tattoo parlours (no we didn't get one) so we stopped for a drink at a place called silk, I had a Big Chang, that's some nice beer! After a while of sitting drinking, we see three girls drinking two tables over, they start speaking to us and we all realise we'd met in the immigration line at the airport, of all the bars in all of Bangkok!!! Then we start chatting to some friendly German guys, another beer and we're back at the hotel to await the next day's adventure to koh samui and koh phangan for the full moon party! Censored details of which will be published tomorrow!
Thanks for reading!
