T-minus 1 hour!
In one hour my first client arrives!
And we are ready!
We have worked non stop all through the day to get the two training yachts ready this week. Sailingholidays is the biggest company I have worked for by far and I am still amazed at the amount of resources, personnel and expertise that is on offer here. I have learned so much in the past 6 weeks. But there is always so more still to learn and do. The rest of the staff have joked that there are 2 of us working on just 2 yachts while on the flotillas, 2 staff work on about 12 yachts. However, we have improved both yachts so much that they are the best they have ever been. James and I took one yacht out on Thursday by ourselves for a 'training and shake down' cruise. We only went out for 2 hours but I could get very used to the conditions out here. Only 7 mph of wind, perfect temperature, and no no-one to teach! It was bliss and we managed to get the pole up and extended, which is good because we rigged it beforehand and now we know it works and how it works.
The course starts on Monday morning so from Monday I am sailing in the Ionian around Corfu and the other Ionian Islands for 2 weeks. As this is my first cruise around the area I will be sticking near James' yacht for the first week. Then for the second week Steve, the sailing school principal will be out on a yacht and I will have the opportunity to go somewhere else with him.
Today is Good Friday and tomorrow 90% of the staff have hired bicycles (myself included) and will be gathering at the marina at 7.30am, that's 5.30 am UK time, and will be doing a bar crawl into town. Easter in Greece is much bigger than Christmas and a tradition that is unique to Corfu is 'pot smashing.' It starts at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) and we will get horded into an area in the town centre and get pots thrown at us. I don't know why anything about this tradition yet, but I will let you know if I find out!
Another client is arriving tomorrow and James volunteered to stay at the marina and greet them and he said that I should definitely experience the pot smashing. So I volunteered to stay 'in' in the bar at the marina and wait for the client arriving tonight. It is now 11pm and she should have landed 15 minutes ago. Taxi has just arrived so I am off to see if this is her...
...
There is also a small flotilla heading off this week and that taxi had clients on that flotilla so I can finish here and sign off officially.
The summer starts here!
By the way, I heard that London saw temperatures of 27 degrees on Thursday. Very jealous, especially after the weather we had early this week - it was very cold and wet, typical English April weather.
