WHERE TO START...
I know - The Pot Smashing in Corfu Town, 10 days ago.
It was awesome. We did indeed muster at 8am with our hired bicycles. It was the earliest anyone had probably got up on a day off. The pot smashing was at 11am and it does not take 3 hours to ride into town, more like 25 minutes. We started early as we went into town via every bakery and shop and stopped for a chat and a drink. We stood in a street and at 11am on the dot suddenly everyone stood at the side of the street and people on balconies threw pots full of water into the street. Video to be uploaded soon. After the pot smashing at least four marching bands paraded around the town. We then went to pizza hut for lunch and went for a swim. Then, at midnight we watched the fireworks around the island from a quiet beach. But the fireflies there got our attention more that the fireworks. The light they emit went off and on so regularly we actually thought it was a guard light of some sort. Then it started to come towards us and we were transfixed! That was Saturday night and on Sunday all my first clients arrived.
As I mentioned in my last blog entry I stuck with James for the first week, mainly so he could show me around the harbours. It was also a lot of fun for the clients to meet up at the end of the day and compare stories. In the last 10 days I went south to the island of Paxos, where we also met up with a flotilla, along the mainland coast of Greece and up to the Faraway islands of Mathraki, Orthoni and Ericousa, all northwest of Corfu. As it is still not the proper season yet, half the stores and bars were closed. One of my crew was Greek and he always openend conversation with the locals so I benefited with stories and local knowledge, even if we did go ploughing with the yacht one evening to try and find some more shelter! The last couple of days we went to the same place as another flotilla and enjoyed 'racing' them there.
So it has been great to see the islands when it's quiet and I also enjoyed meeting up with a couple of the flotillas, even though it has only been 10 days since I last saw the lead crews. I am looking forward to bumping into them more this summer. I also bumped into an old uni friend in Sivota (Mortos) on the Greek mainland which was a very nice surprise.
My next trip is on Saturday as I am delivering the training yacht 20 miles south to Plataria and then giving her up as she is going on flotilla next week. I am not sure if I will be training or shorebased yet. But on the 20th May is my first bareboat skipper work in the Saronics which I am looking forward to.
Miss you all, kind of...
Love,
Will x
