Suyt mat mot ngon chan= My Biggest Fear crossing the street: loosing a toe!
Well it has been a while since I have last updated my blog.I know I am so bad at updating this thing, but it's hard.I have so little time to devote to keeping y'all informed. I want to see and do so many things, but I have to keep up with my classes too.
Anyway, as you see I posted more pictures. We went to the Cu Chi tunnels and to the Cao Dai temple on Saturday. It was so much fun and interesting. The Cu Chi tunnels are all of the interconnected tunnels dung by the Vietnamese to escape bombing. They were dug by using shovels. Some of us tried to get into the one of the small openings, but I didn't dare try.I thought that wouldn't be able to get out. However, it did get to shoot and AK47.That was awesome.
The Cao Dai temple was pretty cool too. From what I know about the religion, they pretty much believe in anything.I remember on my mission meeting a few people that followed Cao Dai.And every now and then we would see a pamphlet from previous missionaries on their altar.
Let's see what else has happened?oh, I went teach my kids English on Friday, but most of them had gone out to play; there was only one kid there, Manh.He is 10 years old and a really cool kid.Once I got there he showed me his Pokemon cards. Then he started to ask me if I could draw.He got out his notebook and pencil, and then proceeded to ask me "Biet ve cai nay khong? Biet khong? Ve khong?" (Do you know how to draw this?)Every single card he pulled out he asked me this question. Then with the limited drawing skills that I have, I tried my best to copy the image on the card.Just when I thought he was out of Pokemon cards and this game was over, he went upstairs to get more cards!I swear he asked me "Do you know how to draw this?" about 148 times.
And Nikki, you would be proud of me.I've been going to church every chance that I have. This Sunday was Fast Sunday, so members got up to share their testimonies.I am amazed at the faith that many of the members have. They try so hard and sacrifice so much to live the gospel the best they can.I am so glad that the church is here and I have an opportunity to attend the meetings. The Spirit is so strong every time I attend, and I know that I am in the right place. Also there is a feeling of comfort being surrounded by those that have the same beliefs and standards.
After church, I spent the rest of the day with Hien, a member of the branch. He is a really cool guy.He showed me around Bien Hoa city, visited his uncles, and just relaxed.Man, his uncles drilled me hard. They were throwing out all sorts of Vietnamese words trying to trip me up.They succeeded, but only because I was having a hard time understanding their accent. That night Hien's uncle took us out to eat bun rieu, a kind of soup, and tested my ability to eat mam tom, a type of shrimp paste with a pungent smell.Little did he know that I was acquainted with the taste and therefore could eat it.It is an acquired taste for most.Oh. I guess they really don't see a lot of "Nguoi Nuoc Ngoai" foreigners in Bien Hoa because almost everywhere I went people where staring at me.Honestly it's kinda weird.
