Th?o ?à n: My first visitWell this Wednesday was my first day at my internship at Th?o ?à n, a shelter for boys that live on the streets.First I hopped on a xe ôm to take me to the Thao Dan office where I was going to meet a boy to take me to the safe house in another district. When I arrived at the office, it looked like no one was there, then all of a sudden these 3 kids, 1 boy and 2 girls, come out of now where and start to yell in the house for some one to come out and let them in.While I am waiting for my escort, I start to ask the kids their names and how old they are you know the usual, and they start to climb on me take my helmet and sunglasses and hand me various types of food. Also I learn the Vietnamese style of paper, rock, scissors.(I am still lousy player like in the states.)After about 30 minutes my 10 year old escort shows up.He says that he is going to take me to Cô Mai's house. So I am waking down the street with four kids ages 5-10 guiding me to this lady's house. Most of the time the little girl wants to hold my hand.Anyway, once we get on the bus, almost everyone on the bus is staring at me with these four kids. And I still have no idea were I am going. This old man says something to me in French and my ten year old guide keeps rubbing his hands on my arm and comparing his hands against mine. Finally, our stop.I get off the bus with the four kids, and we walk about 5 minutes Cô Mai's safe house.Once I get there, I am bombarded with about 8 young boys.Climbing on me, lifting up my shirt, touching me, pulling my arm hair, and just wanting to be around me.Man, they sure took a lot of interest in me.I just took time the first day getting to know the kids and what they like to do.We played" stop and go" a few times then they showed me their rooms and where they have school. They are so happy with so the little they have and willing to learn. I am going back on Friday to teach them English.I bought a few English books at a local bookstore to read to them.Hope they like it.
