Travel Day- 22 hours and 9057 miles later!
I made it into Saigon safely!Man that was such a long flight.I thought that I was never going to make it.DFW to SFO was not that bad, but the flight from SFO to Hong Kong.Fortunately I got an isle seat, so I could stretch out my legs somewhat, and I did not have to bother anybody to move so I could get up.Also, they played some fairly entertaining movies.Lets see they played The Painted Veil, Bridge to Terabithia, Wild Hogs, Shooter, and Breach.I only watched the first two, and honestly I am not gonna lie the Bridge to Terabithia made me tear up a little. Most of the flight I was sleeping.I tried to read, but I just could not get into it.Oh! And just my luck,I was sitting near to the only passenger on the plane that spewed chunks. With only 20 minutes to landing, she lost her lunch.Poor little girl; I felt bad for her.
Arrival into Hong Kong pretty much just like any other airport.Except everything was a different language, and the airport was surrounded by mountains. The flight from Hong Kong to Saigon, was the best flight I have been on in my life!I got to sit in first class for the first time every.I got an upgrade for the miles from SFO to Hong Kong.Luxury baby!Newspapers, toothbrushes, sleeping masks, personal reading lamps, vibrating chairs, and the chairs actually recline (not like in coach where they just tip back). And I had leg room to spare!I got to eat dinner with a real fork and knife on real plates; it tasted like real food.
Time to arrive in TP Ho Chi Minh?I did not know what to expect. The airport was like any other- waiting, and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for your luggage. After waiting what seemed like another 14 hour flight, I wheeled my bags through customs and out to the lobby the airport.I headed straight for the currency exchange booth and exchanged $200.00 for 3,110,014 Vietnamese Dong.Sounds like a lot don't it.To put thing in perspective for ya $1.00 US is about 16,000 Vietnam Dong.So 100,000 VND is about $6 USD.Crazy huh?Next stop, find a taxi.I just walked 5 feet to the next booth, showed them the address of the guest house I will be staying, and for a total of $5 USD, I was off to my room.(I probably could have bargained them down to a cheaper price, but I was in no mood to.)A nice young lady led me out side to my taxi that was waiting for me.
Stepping outside the airport, I felt like stepping into a sauna with 34 people in it.My shirt stuck right to me.Hoards of people where gathered outside the airport waiting for their relative and friends from the flight.I literally had to fight my way through the crowd to make it to the taxi.
Driving in Saigon is quite the adventure. There are practically no rules at all.Tons of people on scooters whizzing by weaving where ever they can find an open spot, honking horns..Scary?I was glad I was in a taxi, and the driver (I hoped) knew where he was going.Since I arrived at night, I wasn't able to see much of the town.(Also, I was in shock that I am in Ho Chi Minh City?
Finally, I arrived at the guest house. They where expecting me and had everything ready for me.I also met a couple of other people whose names escape me now.I was in no mood to talk?I just wanted to show and get some sleep.
