After spending 8 hours on a tiny coach we arrived in Tokyo at 8am. we couldn.t sheck into our hostel until 4pm so spent the day exploring. the first port of call was the imperial palace and the surronding grounds which were serene but one is unable to get anywhere near the palace itself as the royal family are very private. afterwards we headed to akihabara electric town which is crazy and typical tokyo. the streets were teeming with people and lined with electronic and anime/manga shops. lots of girls dressed up in anime costumes yelling and trying to get people to enter their shops. we ate a maid cafe. a sub genre of anime involves maids, often robot maids, who are are subservient to their ,masters, the waitresses were dressed like these maids, very strange but nice green tea icecream. left akihabara and headed for roppongi which is also where we plan to visit tonight as it is suppossed to be full of bars. brand new shopping distritc, very nice but a bit commercial for my tastes. the hostel we are staying at has capsule beds, pretty much an enclosed bed with a pull across curtain, pretty cool. we had a night out in osaka and went to a tiny but brilliant japanese bar were the staff had huge smiles all night and were really friendly. arcades here are always full of people, lots of light and loads of sound. had octupus balls for a snack the other day, disgusting
