We are Sailing
Today was all about seeing Kos a little closer. Cheryl and I found this great little cafe that sold English breakfasts, so we made an early start. After we finished we caught up with the others at the Marina cafe. From there we decided to hire some bikes. I would have preferred the Dune buggies they all drive around in, but I can say that I am not confident in driving on the other side of the road. Lets play it safe on the bikes. The bike shop guy was really friendly, and before you know it we were on our way. The Island has plenty of cycles ways to choose from, as a consequence bikes are a very popular way of seeing it. Initially we headed east on the island, and area we had seen coming in on the boat. It took you up past a very luxurious resort called the Hippocrates, after the famous Doctor this Island is known for. The beaches are not like our, but a little more rocky. They were filled to capacity with beach beds and great little sun shelters. But other than that, there wasn't alot to see. We then turned around and headed back towards the city centre, past the port, and into the west side of the island. Initially we took an inner road off the beach, which gave us a look at Greece once out of the tourist precinct. From there we went up the west coast along the beach, past quite a few luxury resorts. Sadly though, you can see where the road and cycleway would have been quite a spectacular sight when it was put in, but clearly no maintenance has been done on it and it has deteriorated badly. This is not only Kos, but pretty much the same all over Greece. We literally came to the end of the track, so once again we turned around, but this time, we took the seaside route along many more beaches, and hordes of people under umbrellas. Finally about halfway back, we stopped for a well earned lunch at a cafe opposite the beach. The waiter that served us was a rather rotund, but extremely jovial fella, who enticed us to have a lunch of various taste plates, of the different dishes the cafe served. He found it quite amusing that we Australians, and as such gave us great service. Diane found this poor little cat to feed. It looked like it was starving, so she gave it something to eat. Unlike our cats, the cats here are really quite good looking, and seem to be a feature of the Island. You can buy calendars with these cats on them. To be honest with you, we had got quite comfortable at this place, and probably had more drinks than we should have. Getting up to go was very difficult. Finally we started on our way back, on the way I stopped to buy a paper, and parked my bike up not thinking,'and did not lock it up. When I came out of the shop I couldn't distinguish it from the other 5000 bikes parked up! Eventually I found it, and continued back to the bike shop, where there others were waiting. Once we finished here, it was back to the boat for a snooze (and we needed it). After a couple of hours Cheryl and I made our way down to the Marina Cafe where wireless was available to do my blogg. This has now necome'a good habit. At anout 8.00 we went back to
