We are Sailing
Well the highlight of todays trip is of course traversing the Corinth Canal. We had a pretty easy morning in Corinth. Went down town to have some breakfast, looking like the pied piper with about a dozen Marina dogs following us. Not sure what these dogs are about, but they certainly thought they could hit us for a feed.
Finding breakfast was hard, as the Greeks in this part of the world have never heard of bacon and eggs. In the end we had toasted Jam sandwiches and fresh orange juice. Brian got a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with the customary potato chips. ( a la Samboys)
We left port at around 10.00 and headed across the Bay to the Canals opening. Stuart did the radio work because he can speak pigeon something, which sounds a bit Greeky. Actually you can say anything and it sounds Greek. Once at the channel we got told to circle around and wait for next message. And wait we did, until they realised they had mistaken us for another boat. We got the go ahead, and got told to hurray because we were dragging our feet. (or in sailors language we were dragging our anchor) The hurray is because the road bridge is closed to allow us to go through. Once we straightened up there it was, this bloody narrow channel. Given what we have been eating for the last week we were concerned we would plug it up. However Brian being the consummate sailor that he is, took it all in his stride. Again the pictures do not do justice to it, simply because of the sheer size of it. The sail itself was quite easy and uneventful, we just savored the moment, and pinch ourselves to ensure we weren't dreaming. On the way, there was Bungy jumping off one of the main traffic Bridges.
3.2 Mile later we got to the other end. It was quite Windy, and again we had to circle around for a while, to get a birth so we could pay our toll. Berthing again was difficult, because of the wind, but we did it OK just... We nearly rear ended the boat in front. Diane and Stuart organised the disorganised Greek paperwork, paid the toll E255.00 and off we went.
Today was the first day we actually put our sail up. So if you can imagine sailing silently on the Med, drinking champagne, and listining to Pucini, then you will know how good our day really was.
We wanted to go to the Island of Nisos Porus, but the wind came up rather quickly (both on and off the boat) so we headed for the Aegina Marina. Aegina is the a day tour destination from Athens, so it is very busy. It is now 11.45pm and the streets are packed. Great spot, very quaint. Tomorrow we are off to Nisos Poros.
