We are Sailing
We left Paros at about 6.15 this morning. Dawn was just breaking, which is what we needed, as we had to negotiate a cahnnel between 2 Islands just outside of Paros. In the passage there was a wreck, rocks, and shallow water. Stuart was up front looking for signs of danger, Brian carefully watching CMAPS and the depth guages. We could only do between 2 and 4 knots. However, the guys did a sterling job, and we were on our way. The wind had picked up to about 30 knots so the ocean was a little rough. Even so, we were able put the headsal up. I went down for a sleep and left Brian and Stuart to it. I came back up after about an hour, and just as I did a school of about 6 Dolphins decided to swim with the boat. They were really playing, swimming in and out around in front of the boat. This went on for about an hour, and was great to watch.
We were making great time and at some stage it got to 10 knots, so our trip was going better than expected. Eventually we reached Santorini, and it was amazing. Santorini itself is built around the caldren of a volcano, which blew its top around 1640 bc. The explosion was 4 times bigger than Krakatoa. Moving approx 63km3 of material. The Caldren is very clear and distinct, and in the middle is the Cauldera which even today has hot springs,'and indication the Volcano is still alive. The good part about coming by boat is we were able to sail in and around the Caldren. We eventually moored at the Vlikadha Marina south of Santorini (40 euro by taxi) because it is the only place that has an anchorage shallow enough. To moor of Santorini, the anchor wouldn't hit the bottom because it is around 400m deep. The Marina people are very friendly and helpful. We did have an issue coming into the Marina where we hit a sandbank, so Stuart got everyone to the side of the boat once again, then he told the girls to run to the back of the boat. So Cheryl and Heather did what they were told. Now in 'Cheryls' words not mine, she said " the sad part of all this is that when we went to the back of the boat the boat moved off the sandbar!" We moved into deeper water, and eventually moored the boat. The Marina people have been so friendly. We quickly went up and had lunch (3.30) and we decided we would get cleaned up and catch a taxi to go into town.
We arrived in town at about 6.00. The town was full of tourists and quite busy. The girls started checking out the shops, and the boys were looking for a place to have a few drinks. We did all the usual photo opportunities, and then found this roof top bar. Dianne suffers from a fear of heights, so understandably she took some convincing to go to the rooftop, overlooking the Caldera. due to the ocean being rough, and Heather and Dianne suffering from seasickness, the girls have decided to catch the ferry tonight to Kos. We will sail to Kos and meet them on Sunday. Hopefully we can get some sail up tomorrow and give the boat a workout.
