We ran out of internet on our trip from Rava to Vrulje, hence the late blog. We got off to a reasonably early start and we decided we would make our way to Skradin. This was more than a reasonable days travelling, so we knew we were going to have to have a stopover.
Brian was keen to test out his sailing skills by finding the most difficult route amongst all these islands. (sailings equivilant of a slalom course) The islands are full of these little settlements that seem to pop up out of nowhere. The island of Kornati where Vrulje is located was devasted by two fires about 100 years ago, and it burnt all the vegetation so much, it never recovered. The islands are pretty well deviod of any vegetation, and are mainly grasses and rock. There are many rock walls used as fencing for paddocks. They stretch for miles. All i can say is I am glad it wasn't me building them, as you would have ended up in a right mental state by the time you finished.
When we arrived at Vrulje, there were two settlements we had to choose from. We chose to moore at the new one on the entrance of the bay. The girls are getting real professional at mooring now, no more throwing all the ropes to the bloke on the jetty. :) When we finally tied up, we realised the plank to get to the jetty was going to be on a very steep angle. Our boat has the ability to put the back down to create a platform. We chose however not to do it, but it did present a challenge to get to the jetty.
We decided to check in and go for drinks. Brian I and Cheryl were fine at walking the plank, but Dianne was a little nervous, but she was determined not to accept our help. To her credit though she made it.
We had a few drinks in the bar, and the girls wanted to go back to the boat, to cook up some mince we had brought to make a bolognaise. Dianne was already nervous about going up the gangplank.
The girls decided to go to the toilet, I raced back to the boat to get my camera so I could take pictures of them getting on the boat. So, in a world first, you will see Dianne stumbling to get up. (I have a whole series of them, but only 1 can go on this blog). The long and the short of it, we were concerned that someone was going to end up in the drink, so we moved the boat forward and put the back down.
The night on Vrulje was a lot better than we could hope for. The staff at the Core Restaurant were fabulous, the food was good, and it was all reasonably priced.
We made an early start for Skradin, mainly because the toilets at the Core Restaurant never opened to 9am and Brian was busting to go. Given his bowels it would not have done the environment any good staying in the mooring. Mind you we only got a 100 meters off shore, and all of a sudden I was the skipper. I note Brian also restricted the speed so it was only just enough to stop the wind blowing us backwards.
Croatia has so much to offer in terms of sailing. The sheer number of islands gives you so many exploring options. Whilst Croatia is noticeably dearer than when we were here 4 years ago, the standard of the marinas and moorings has improved considerably also.
