We are Sailing
Today our destination was to be Pomena on the Island of
MLjet. It wasn't a long journey only about 2 1/2 hours. So there was no urgency
to leave.
As we had arranged we all decided to go for a walk through the back of the
town and look at some of the old buildings and the church. Roz, Pete, Jo and
Ray left earlier than Cheryl and I. The walk was good, and as usual you had to
be a mountain goat to get anywhere. The view from the Church at the back of the
town was wonderful, and certainly worth the walk. During our walk, we met up
with this very old lady, who was cleaning her street outside her little stone
home. She couldn't speak English, but she talked anyway. (I think she
was lonely) We just smiled at each other. A smile is certainly an
international language. We moved on back into the town, to the restaurant we
had a meal at the previous night. Jo, Ray, Pete and Roz were already there
having a coffee. A little later Brian and Dianne called down and we had a very
nice breakfast. After breakfast we meandered down to the boat, past the little
shops, and fresh fruit market set up earlier in the morning. There was a couple
of old men having a beer in the front of the local store. It was simply a
laid back, stress free little town, and well worth the visit.
By mid-morning, we decided to leave for Pomena. Stuart and Heather and
their crew had already left about an hour earlier. The trip to Pomena was very
pleasant. The weather was still quite warm and humidity was very high.
When we arrived at the island, we saw the other boat moored on the
opposite side of the bay we intended to go to. We ended up tying our boat
onto Stuart and Heathers, and everyone took the opportunity to kick
back, swim and relax. It was great fun, and it is really good that all the
people on the two boats enjoy each other’s company. After about a couple of
hours, we moved off to where we intended to go, into the town of Pomena.
Jo had done her homework on trip advisor, and the restaurant we wanted to go to
had two free moorings. Atola and Adora again moored side by
side. Like all these places the staff at the restaurant helped us getting
the boats in.
We used the rest of the time before tea to take a quick look around the town.
It's not exactly a big town so it did not take very long. During our last trip
to MLjet we stayed at Polace, which is approx. 5 km further around
the island. Both these towns serve as an entrance to the MLjet national
park. I can only say MLjet is a very pretty island and totally different to the
rather stony and arid islands of the Mediterranean. Well worth the national
park status.
The two crews sat down to the meal on one table. Like all our meals over here,
it was very good. The boys managed to demolish a fair bit of house red. Ray,Ray
even decided to join us. Just as we thought we were finished, the owner
brought out a further litre on the house. Well I do not think we need to
go in depth as to how it all ended up, suffice to say next day was going to be
a slower than today.
Early morning we were awoken by a thunderstorm and some very heavy rain, and
strong winds. We were expecting these storms and was one of the reasons we
chose to be moored at a jetty, and in a protected area. The rain was so
heavy it filled our canopy with water to the extent that it had stretched to
the depth of touching the table on the deck. Pete noticed it first, and then
enticed Roz and Jo up to give him a hand to try and empty the water out before
it tore the canopy. It was quite hilarious really. They looked like
3 drowned rats fighting a losing battle, as the rain was dropping more water
than they were moving. Of course I was watching from the dry cabin. However in
the end, I hopped up and gave them a hand to sort it. All in all a good team
effort, and it certainly saved the canvas from being torn.
The weather forecast indicated the storm would be over by lunchtime, and if
that was the case, we could move onto Lumbarda once more.
I managed to catch up with Ray and Jenny, having a coffee in the small café next door. Given Rays rather over enthusiastic night of tasting the reds, I was surprised to see him. In fact the owner of the restaurant walked past later in the morning with this beaming smile gesturing to Ray about his drinking, and managed to say in broken English "you are funny".
We again whiled our time away in town, checking out the large hotel and the swimming spots. (and trying not to get wet from the rain). Finally we all went to this great little pizza place for lunch. Due to the rain, eating indoors was at a premium. We were squeezed in like sardines in a can, but it was better than getting soaking wet. When lunch was finished the storm had passed by and it was time to move on once again.
This time I managed to get the boat out without taking the restaurant with me.
