So second time lucky we ended up at the cooking school. Before that however we were given a tour around a local market where we were shown local herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits I had never seen before. We also saw the different types of curry pastes that could be bought. Much to Adam's disbelief we saw a bag of saffron for 400B about £8 which would have cost £5000 to a chef in Britain!!!
Once at the school we were given a menu and given the choice of which dishes we wanted to cook. I chose Tom Yum soup (hot and spicy soup), Pad Thai noodles, spring rolls, chicken and cashew nut stir fry, a Panang curry and then a dessert of pumpkin in coconut milk. Adam chose spicy soup with sweet basil, drunken noodles, green papaya salad, chicken and cashew nuts , a yellow curry and sticky rice with young coconut.
The first two dishes however we were advised that 3/4 chillis was mild much to our shocked where everybody in the classes's mouths were blown off. The following dishes such as the stir fry and the curry we all toned down and it's surprising how cheap and easy it is to make huge quantities of these dishes once you have access to the ingredients! For both Adam and I these desserts were the first taste we had of a Thai dessert and both of us were pleasantly surprised. Adam's resembled a sweet coconutty rice pudding where as mine was just a thick coconut soup with sweet soft pumpkin in it.
After the class we both went to relax at our favourite restaurant and bar with some drinks but very little to eat as we were so stuffed from the day!
